Australia loses its mind over new sausage sizzle laws

A seemingly trivial health and safety proposal for the iconic Bunnings sausage sizzle has caused public outrage and has raised the ire of a popular talk show host.

Anyone buying a sausage from the ubiquitos Bunnings BBQ may have noticed that the fried onion is now placed beneath the sausage.

That's because pieces of fallen onion that were previously placed on top of the sausage have become a “slipping hazard” for Bunnings' shoppers.

Obviously having nothing better to do than focus on trivial tripe, much of the Australian public has collectively gone nuts over the new law on social media, with many saying Australian culture is one step closer to death.

Today co-host Karl Stefanovic has also joined in the fray – as only he knows how – calling the proposal "health and safety gone mad".

“This will ruin Australia,” said Stefanovic. “Australia will not make it through today if this happened. Bunnings, you’ve done a lot of things right. But, I’m sorry, you’ve got this one wrong. You don’t mess with perfection.”

Do you care where the onion on your sausage goes? Are there more pressing concerns on which the country could focus?

THE PHONSE,   tell me one thing that IS good for us,   it seems everyday we are told of another food that we shouldnt eat,   is anything good for us?

I'm applying for the job of onion inspector.

Had no idea you are a girl and such a sexy one at that Darcy!!

This is more than serious, it's big news in New Zealand and Singapore and my son in the US asked me if we've all gone mad down under. Now Bunnings has a how to do chart for their sausage sizzle. You do not adhere, you are sacked.

Just looking at the Health part - it is best NOT to serve Cancer & Heart-attack foods such as Sausages, Bacon, etc.

What is the Cancer Society doing with their funds? They need to PREVENT Cancer, yet they seem to be rather silent about such foods being promoted even by many top Chefs, even though WHO has made clear statements about such processed foods.

I agree George, I avoid early morning and lunch time at Bunnings, I go late to avoid the toxic smells. It is a full on health hazard.

Well said George. People just don't want to eat healthy. My grand children go to a birthday party nearly every week and always get junk food. I went to 3 parties thru out all my child hood. The kids of today haven't got a hope and eating sausages doesn't help. Folks if your hungry go home and make yourself something healthy.

My grand kids eat far more healthy than kids did when I was a child. Back then mince meat was so full of fat it was pale pink. All meals were cheap meat, mashed potato and 1 or 2 other veg. All vegetables were over cooked by everyone. I gave my children much more healthy food and they give their children a healthier diet again. Many mothers, at least in my area, wouldn’t be seen dead serving kids junk food at parties. They are more educated about diet than our parents were in the 1940s and ‘50s.

Is this in your hippy commune outside Byron Bay ?

I hear adding a bit of cannabis to meals makes it tastier . Is that true ?

I don’t live in Byron Bay. Too many rich yuppies there. Don’t smoke or eat cannabis either. I’m just a clean living larrikin. You sound to be in a foul mood today Pete. What’s wrong? Did you eat an off grass fed sausage?

What happens if the sausage falls out first?

Conception problems?

Should ban the whole sausage sizzle, it is a health hazard and people do not need to be encouraged to eat more meat. Why don't they serve a good fruit and vegie smoothie instead, that will help people be healthier. As long as they put the banana skins in the compost bin, now there is a selling point for Bunnings.

Musicveg - stop being so miserable

live a little

a beautifil beef burger and sweet potatoe fries or a pepperoni pizza once in a while is not going to you any harm

I wonder how meat pies and sausage sangers came to be Aussie icons? I don’t eat either and apart from politicians I know few people who do eat such unhealthy muck. I agree we could do much better by serving healthy foods at these stalls, like smoothies or vege/bean patty sangas on top of onions. I’m sure people would enjoy them just as much, if not more.

And how are charities supposed to make money selling that expensive tasteless crap to the masses ?

ROBI,   i wouldnt eat a bought meat pie,   but a snag,  ?    come on people,   a snag in bread,   esp, with onions is great,    NOW and THEN,       surely that is not going to hurt your diet,   i will have one next saturday,    i only see them on voting day,   so next week,   YA,   ILL ENJOY,
