Is your carpet toxic?

An Australian carpet manufacturer has called for a ban on the manufacture and sale of nylon pile and recycled synthetic carpets in Australia and New Zealand.

Greg Galt, managing director of Supertuft, believes the chemicals used in the making of nylon and other synthetic carpets present a substantial risk to human health and the environment.

Mr Galt has written to the Carpet Institute of Australia and about 1000 architects, interior designers and retailers nationwide to raise awareness of the dangers.

A research paper titled Eliminating Toxics in Carpet: Lessons for the Future of Recycling, published by the US-based Healthy Building Network in 2017, highlights the dangers of toxic flame retardants in carpets.

The report states: “Halogenated flame retardants used in carpet which contain chlorine or bromine are among the chemical industry’s most notorious products. They are linked to hyperactivity, learning disabilities reproductive harm and cancer.”

The report also warns of the dangers of ‘halogenated and organophosphate flame retardants’ to the environment.

It states: “Flame retardants can be emitted from carpet into dust and the air both during use and from operations that recycle and dispose of carpet waste. Released into the environment, they can persist and bioaccumulate up the food chain …”

Mr Galt said: “Should Nylon and PET plastic pile carpet be banned in Australia and New Zealand? The answer, in my opinion, is yes.”

What type of carpet do you have in your home?

None. We have plain synthetic flooring - which probably emits toxins anyway due to the manufacturing process. We don't have carpets or rugs partly because we have two dogs and partly to eliminate any tripping hazards from rug edges etc. I do love carpets but just wouldnt be able to keep up with the cleaning involved with having pets indoors. I did try having a very nice hand made rug by the bed but one of my dogs decided the real wool pile was very tasty so that experiment didn't last very long. Hahaha - good thing I love my dogs more than I love carpets hey?

Ha ha Bushbaby. I was looking after my grand dog for a few months once and he ate parts of the (small) mat in my bedroom which he had decided was his favourite sitting spot at night. He’s dead now but I still love that chewed up mat.

Awwww Ny19 .........   polished floorboards (with one large rug in lounge)  and slate here ....no probs   :-)

No real probs here either Foxy but dogs have a liking for seeking out mats and this particular dearly beloved dog decided to eat mine :)

.... gives a whole new meaning to the words "Today's Special" on the Menu - "Meaty Mats"   haha

My son has two huge dogs - a German Shepherd and a Bernese Mountain Dog - interestingly enough they have never chewed anything in his house.  Their big "wagging tails" tho' have knocked things over now and then!

His cat however "Miss Toffs" is exactly that - a "Toff" - total disdain for the dogs and rules the house!  As cats do ......   :-)

Pets rule!

My advice is get rid of your curtains, carpets and floor rugs. They are a problem to clean and only serve as a health hazard.

I have pure woolen carpets and Lino in the kitchen and family area and tiles in the foyer

Cancer causing toxins can also be in lino and vynal as well as your lounges.
