Australia’s role in creating climate emergency
Australia is one of the largest drivers of climate change globally, a new report has found.
The Australia Institute report, “High Carbon from a Land Down Under”, shows Australia is the world’s third largest exporter of coal, oil and gas, coming in just behind Russia and Saudi Arabia.
“Australia is a deviant on a global scale. It is a significant contributor to climate change,” said the Climate Council’s head of research, Dr Martin Rice.
“This report highlights that what Australia does on climate change really matters and, currently, we are not doing our fair share,” he said.
“Australia has the highest emissions per capita of any OECD country. In fact, on a per capita basis, Australia is on par with Saudi Arabia,” said the Climate Council’s CEO, Amanda McKenzie.
“The Federal Government continues to ignore the intensifying climate crisis. Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions have gone up and up and up for the past five years,” said Ms McKenzie.
“It is understandable why Pacific Island nations are angered by Australia’s lack of action on climate change. But it’s not just the Pacific that is on the frontline of climate change. It’s still winter and yet Australia is experiencing devastating bushfires in NSW as well as the ongoing drought,” said Dr Rice.
“We can’t continue to burn and export fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. We need a transition plan to position Australia to become a global renewables powerhouse and advance a new economy,” he said.
Should Australia be doing more to tackle the threat of climate change?
OK then.
Close down ALL mining immediately - coal, gas, oil, iron, copper, goild, silver...... Hand back all passports because you are going no-where; close down Qantas, Jet Star, Tiger and Virginand all airports; ground all private jet operators, crop dusters commercial plane operators, fire fighter planes, and scenic flight operators; forget the cruise liners, ferries, trains, cars, buses, scooters, skateboards and bicycles; get rid of all household equipment and applicances - in fact you may have to knock down your house anyway and you may as well resign because your workplace will be gone as well as your workplace furniture and equipment so you you won't be able to do anything anyway; close all the shops there will be nothing to buy anyway and no money or plastic to buy it with; toss most of your clothes; forget shoes, boots, slippers, thongs; if you want to eat then grow it yourself - no gardening tools of course and no fertilisers or growth enhancers, if it doesn't rain - you don't eat!
And this is just the start if you think the answer is to stop using fossil fuels. How do you think solar panels and wind turbines are made? What about hydro generators - what are they made from and how? So you won't have them either.
And guess what? Australia makes almost none of this stuff!
Think this is all a bit far fetched? Well so is the current hysteria about a 'climate emergency'.
