Our Bones

Human Skeleton Anatomical Model 180cm

Broken spines could be regrown using a combination of readily available drugs, scientists say.   Stem cells, which build new bone, are switched on to 'red alert'

As I have this Osteoporosis myself as did my Mother --it would be great if they could do something about it rather than push these horrid drugs like --  Prolia and Fosamax, and the like,  as they have dreadful and VERY serious side effects,  but the Drs will do almost anything to get you to take them.

Why not also use criminals for  testing -- they get freeboard and lodging

What a cruel, inhumane and insensitive post. I am aware Communist China uses its prisoners for the body parts trade and use species on the brink of extinction for medicine. Maybe you should go live there.

I am sorry if I offended anyone BUT --

I think many prisoners that have done Horrific crimes -- I am not talking of normal everyday persons I am speaking if heinous crimes -- it makes me so sad that innocent animals are tortured in this way when there are others that could maybe help with medications and such -- when they have done horrendous things --

And NO I do NOT agree with what China does and ai was NOT meaning that at all!

Children get free board and lodging --?      I sure hope so --

Do you think it is right and moral to torture Animals in this way?

Apart from any questions about prisoners' human rights if any of them inadvertently suffer permanent disability from this experimentation going wrong, the government will be permanently liable for their upkeep. Children get free board and lodging too, so why not use them as well??  This suggestion is both ludicrous and immoral.

My experience with bad backs has generally been that it is the disc between the vertebrae that that deteriorate and allows the vertebrae to rub against each other. Stem cell research needs to concentrate on re-growing these discs, not the bones.

Plan B, not one of your better ideas.

Hi, mogo51,

but do you agree with what they do to and put innocent animals through?  would it not be OK to take the evil beasts and trial mediations on them?   Is that cruel --- it is nothing the same as what the Chinese do with the organs  -- which horrifies me --

I am interested and willing to listen but I like to ask other opinions too

Hear hear mogo 51!

The world is over-populated ,

perhaps we should not be trying to make medications to extend human lives.

Definetely should not be using animals to experiment with

...... they feel pain same as humans.

You are right on both counts, Suze.  Regarding the use of animals, there are now comprehensive computer programs available that negate the need for live subjects to check for the efficacy and side effects of most treatments not yet tried on humans.  These are often more accurate than animal experiments since no other creature exactly replicates our physiology, yet their uptake is frustratingly slow, either because of the initial expense or simply due to people's natural resistance to replacing that which they are used to using.

Orangutans  are closely related to humans, having 97% of DNA in common

Yet humans hunt this threatened spcies for meat .... cannibalism ??

After the mothers are killed, the babies are sold for pets

The lucky ones get rescued

....in nature the Babies cling to their mothers and suckle their mother’s milk until the age of 6 years

To support and help with the care of these infants, you can

Adopt an Orphan

.... for as little as $65 a year.

Which criminals? All of them or just those who have committed violent crimes? I certainly do NOT support testing on animals but to use prisoners instead smacks of the Nazi medical experiments on Jews and other prisoners during the second world war. There are volunteers who get paid for taking the risk of drug testing and their are now more tissues developed in the laboritory for testing drugs.

cirdan ,  This is what I said -- repeated below --

No, I do not think it would be like the Nazis -- as those poor souls were innocent -- and what they did to them was more than horrific -- but as you can see what I said above -- these are the worst of the worst criminals,  I am talking about, and surely it would be more human than testing on Animals!?

Yes Suze, we humans treat all Animals in horrid ways all for the wants of us with not a thought for how they suffer.

Suze you stated

So Suze IF you were suffering and there was a new drug out to cure or help you,  are you saying you would NOT take it???

Plan B

Have been known to take a Panadol

However I am a strong believer in Euthanasia

While I am well, I enjoy life and live it to the fullest.

The world is unable to sustain  an ever increasing population of people especially if people are living longer.

I am sure if you were ill and were able to be cured or treated you would do it -- I also am a strong believer in Euthanasia -- but I have a bit of life left in me as yet --

But I do NOT believe in using Animals for testing

I seem to remember donkey's years ago that in some states of the USA people that wanted to obtain a marriage license had to undergo a blood test, to see what if anything was the matter with their genes if there was a history of serious medical problems.

I don't see that happening anymore, but it would be a good idea to keep control of these hereditary complaints for the future of the human race, thus out breed the deseases.

I have the same issues as Plan B with my bones, 20 years ago I was fine, then I had reactions to histamine and cannot eat dairy, so my bones are suffering.

I am not an advocate of willy nilly breeding anymore as the world is so over populated, I don't agree with test tube babies and I don't agree with surrogate parentage.  Mainly because if nature wanted the couple to have children it would oblige.  It has nothing whatsoever to do with my religion either.

Can't argue with that Suze.  I'd rather that all medical research dollars were spent on the treatment / cure ofchildhood diseases, especially inherited ones.

Viv, it would be even better if people were able to be tested for generic problems before they have children-- and if the children were to be born with a genetic problem -- then choose not to have them --better that than have the poor little blighters suffer.

The trouble with that suggestion is that it is a dangerously slippery slope.  Abortion is already legal in such cases. Are you suggesting it should be compulsory?  And where would you draw the line?   Many genetic abnormalities are pretty insignificant - like 1 of your 2nd toes being longer than your big toe, or your internal organs functioning normally but being on the opposite side of your body to usual.

Viv hi!

Reading as I do, I see so many deformities that are happening in India these days, they are horrific.

If the medical testing indicates these deformities then yes I think compulsory abortion is the only responsible answer to this problem.

I don't care about the additional toes, but double headed babies is not on, look at the Siamese Twins that are born and they live their lives stuck together sharing major organs.

Agree with you Celia 100% I also do not agree with this IVF etc either-- if you are not able to have a child there is a very good reason--

NO, you would not worry about crooked toes and the like BUT if the child was to suffer then by all mean abort.

I also believe in abortion in some cases -- but not for use for birth control -- there are many forms of birth control out there and THEY do work -- but you can not be lazy about it.

Just heard on ABC that a Cryogenic Facility will be opened in Holbrook NSW

It expects to receive customers at the end of the year

...so with the progress of science they may be able to wake you up with the appropriate treatment

Pretty reasonable cost @ $ fifty thousand.

No, I would not be having Cryogenic -- no matter the price -- can you imagine waking to a world so far forward you know NOTHING at all and having to start life at an old age -- and try and learn it all PLUS the way this bloody world is heading there may not be a planet in the near future

Firstly, cryogenics may not be all it's cracked up to be. I've heard that it works better on hard tissue than soft tissue. Not good news for your brain!  Anyway, with the Earth being already overcrowded, why give a second life to those who have already enjoyed one?  And what about if you'd died from some disease?  Those little nasties may also come back to life. And there's no guarantee that someone would have invented a cure by then.

I agree Viv!
