Big stick being waved at energy companies
Stricter regulations should now ensure cheaper electricity costs are passed on to customers and will hold energy companies to account for manipulation and misconduct.
It’s part of the government’s 'big stick' plan to ensure households get a fairer deal on energy
It also aims to both drive down energy prices and strengthen supply.
The new law was passed six months ago will “ensure reductions in wholesale costs are passed on to customers, while penalties will apply for anti-competitive behaviour or moves to manipulate electricity prices”, say federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg and energy minister Angus Taylor.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have recently said that energy companies have “played a major role in poor outcomes for consumers”.
Mr Frydenberg and Mr Taylor's “big stick” legislation hopes the change that and, in turn, help an increasing number of households experiencing hardship due to COVID-19.
The ACCC will be responsible for enforcing the legislation, with heavy penalties to be applied for any misconduct.
Do you think this will help to lower your energy bill?
Big stick waived more like a feather
This is the biggest joke of all and the joke is on us the consumer.
Prices will never ever ever go down...... whilst we have shareholders that are in the mix of these energy companies..
The worst thing Govt ever did was sell off water, gas and electricity. There golden goose.
and if you live in the ausnet area and get solar you are told by Ausnet the distributor you must be on time of use tarriff the most expensive.........
I received as nasty shock when my power bill came in and I discovered they charged a daily supply fee which had to be paid whether any power was used or not.
I don't know if all power suppliers charge this supply fee or how to check the charges of other companies.
I've had dealings with Energy Australia, AGL, Origin, they all have a supply charge per day for gas and electricity
They all charge a daily fee it is the distributors cost for supplying power to your house, just like water and gas.
The only way to beat them is to move somewhere where you are totally off the grid.
I had a nasty feeling the power companies were all involved with ripping us off. No point in changing over to another.
Wouldn't it be nice if our government supported Australians by nationalising all the essential services they sold off to make a profit for whatever reason it was they sold them. It must be past time they did something for citizens rather than global multi-national or other international companies.
Autumn, the main reason our governments sold off our assets was not to make a profit but to improve the government balance sheet so they coiuld boast what great economic managers they were and to create a pool of money (called the Future Fund) to ensure there was enough money to cover the pollies pensions. An analogy would be to sell your house to pay off the mortgage debt then renting it back from the new owner. Does that make sense to you?
Spot on Eddy
We have to make sure the Pollies have enough money for their pensions
A big stick, I wish the government would beat the energy companies to death! Followed by themselves for selling them off the essential services in the first place! If they were serious they would find a way to get them back damn the expense but I feel its not ever going to happen, so pox on the useless flogs.
The short answer - NO! Our electricity plan is reasonable and the supplier reliable BUT nothing has reduced in cost due to government mandated legislation. Thank heavens for our foresight in having installed 3kW of solar power 5 years ago - this keeps our costs reasonable and is now fully paid for. Privatisation ALWAYS increases consumer costs, no matter what the government says.
I was working on a project related to the phd writing service, on the energy and fuel prices in 2020. According to the irena report, solar and onshore wind are the cheapest energy sources. I am doing further research on this and will share some useful details with you all.
Sophienike we will be waiting with baited breath for your details of your research, but it will have no effect on the prices of distribution and energy retail.....
cheers
LOL
As long as we have a High Court and smart lawyers I suspect that this much vaunted 'big stick' is no more than political posturing while the energy companies laugh into their elbows.
Like others on here, I don't hold out much hope for an improvement in Australian energy prices.

Australians love to support home-grown businesses. But when it comes to our energy retailers, it’s not always clear which ones really are Australian-owned and which are simply part of bigger international organisations. As an example, you may be surprised to learn that, despite its name, EnergyAustralia is not actually an Australian-owned company.
Shopping locally supports the domestic economy and fosters local job opportunities by keeping the profits in Australia. While being foreign-owned isn’t a bad thing by any means, our research over the years has found that many consumers lean towards Australian-owned brands when comparing similar products or services. That’s why we’ve produced this guide to Australian-owned energy companies, including plans and pricing from the retailers that appear to ‘keep it local’ when it comes to profits and even in terms of where their call centres are based.

Does it matter if your energy company is Australian-owned?While it’s good to know about the ownership of your energy providers – and where your money goes when you pay your bill – it shouldn’t dictate your decision in terms of which company you choose. Sure, it’s good if your money stays in Australia and is invested in the local community, or renewable energy solutions. But it’s also important that you pay a fair price and receive good customer service. A foreign-owned energy company is just as capable of providing those things.
