Worth watching on the box
So the footy is winding down with both the AFL and the NRL into the finals. It’s time to start thinking about what we can watch after all footy boots are in mothballs. Here are a couple of Netflix shows that are worthwhile.
One is My Octopus Teacher. Yep – a weird name and a little weird full stop. But overwhelmingly heartening and with beautiful videography. How do they do it?
The Netflix doco captures the year that Craig Foster spent free diving and filming in a cold underwater kelp forest at the tip of South Africa. He came across a curious young octopus and, amazingly, the pair bonded. The experience had a big – positive – influence on Craig’s life, on his relationship with his son, and on his son's life. It’s well worth the 85-minute investment.
Now, who can go past David Attenborough?
David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet is streaming on Netflix. He calls the film his “witness statement” for the environment. He traces his more than 60-year career as a naturalist – starting from when global air travel was a new phenomenon – and maps the degeneration of the planet’s biodiversity. But it’s not just two hours of despair. It’s also about solutions, and is punctuated with suggestions on how we can avert what seems inevitable. But the message is clear – if we are to change anything, we need to act fast.
What have you been watching?
My Octopus Teacher is a beautiful film with stunning photography. My Hubby and I enjoyed it so much we watched it again with our grand children who also loved it.
