11 foods that never go off

dried beans and legumes in jars

Use-by dates, expiry dates, best befores and sell-by dates – they're all a bit confusing really. The good news is that none of them apply to these 11 foods, so you can store them forever and eat them when you feel like it – and not just because a date tells you to!

1. Rice – arborio, white, wild, jasmine and basmati. Store in an airtight container.
2. Honey – keeps indefinitely. If it crystalises, pop the jar in warm water and stir.
3. White vinegar – keep it airthgith and it will last forever.
4. Salt – again, keep it dry and airtight.
5. Vanilla extract – but only the real stuff, not the imitation kind.
6. Sugar – keep the mice and bugs away, and store in a dry, airtight container.
7. Cornstarch – last for years, which is good, because you probably won't use it a lot.
8. Spirits / liquor – you can pass your whisky, whiskey, rum, brandy, cognac and any other hard liquors down to your grandkids (once they're of drinking age of course!)
9. Dried beans – keep them airtight and dry and you can store them for years without losing nutritional value.
10. Instant coffee – pop it in the freezer and it will last forever.
11. Maple syrup – same goes for maple syrup. Keep it in the freezer and you'll always have it for your pancakes.

Do you know of any other foods that keep forever?
