2016 Census Night

We can all expect in early August a letter stating, "would you like a paper form or go online to Log In"..

Many people seem to be scared about the Census and want to know what happens to our private information. If people refuse to fill in all the information they can expect a hefty fine of $180.00. I personally have no worries filling in the form but hope they can guarantee all my information is safe.  If you have visitors staying overnight they have to be included in the form. How do you feel about the Census?

I am waiting with some anticipation to see how the IT systems perform when 10 million people try to log on tomorrow night.

Beside you have till September to fill it in now

It's very straight forward and quicker than I thought it would be, they give you the option to save it until Tuesday night and then just press 'send.'

Heard on the TV that there are scammers ringing up to help people fill out their forms

... BEWARE

Beware of fake Census scammers...trying to get hold of peoples' information.

Fake census workers try to trick people into sharing their personal details KATHRYN POWLEY and ROB HARRIS, Herald Sun August 7, 2016 6:00pm Subscriber only

ENTERPRISING scammers are using the upcoming census as a means to con people out of their personal details.

The Herald Sun has learned “professional” sounding people are calling homes offering help completing the census.

It can also reveal that an embarrassing IT error last week left some personal details of hundreds of Census staff exposed on the eve Australia’s national survey.

Census management was forced to apologise to employees after a “human error” in a group email which asked for emergency contact details left the addresses of staff visible to others.

It is understood the error occurred when an email was sent to a number of recipients with email addresses in the “To” field rather than the “Bcc” field.

In what could be a twin blow for public confidence in the Census as its alienates older Australians with a move online, the simple “phishing scam” involves somebody phoning up from a private number purporting to be a census worker from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The person claims that “due to all the problems” with census, they are available to assist filling with out the form over the phone.

“We just need some basic details such as you name, date of birth, address and licence number.”

The con artist then promises to phone back on census night to go through the online form.

But Australian Bureau of Statistics have confirmed they do not telephone anybody to complete the census over the phone.

Census Victoria director Annette Kelly said anybody needing help with the Census should ask a trusted family member or friend.

She said Census field officers must carry signed ABS identification cards at all times when conducting Census duties and carry bright yellow satchels.

Last week Australian Bureau of Statistics staff, who oversee the Census, were ask to urgently delete an email they had received which left exposed personal details of employees.

Staff were reassured that the ABS took the security of their personal information “very seriously”.

“Census HR has notified ABS Senior Management and has taken internal actions to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” the email, seen by the Herald Sun, said.

The Bureau of Statistics expects the August 9 census to be Australia’s biggest ever online event, with more than 15 million people completing paperless forms.

But phone lines have been overloaded as many people request printed forms instead.

Well, it crashed. How predictable.

Will the minister resposnible resign?

They closed the site down because it was hacked.

And the stupid head of the ABS said the data is still all safe.

How can he possibly guarantee that?

I don't trust ABS assurances in the least. I'm just so sorry I put so much personal information on the net. Never again! Can only hope no identity theft occurs.

... ....... well was it "hacked' or is that just some lame excuse for the fact that they screwed it up beautifully and the site just couldn't cope?  Weird ......  personally I would not believe anything the Govt. said .........

Personal Information?  People put more on Facebook than anywhere else - also anything you purchase "online" they have a lot of "info." about you ... wait til S.A. put renewal of car licence's online in the next 18 months - now that would concern me more?  (Not that I live in S.A.)  Imagine the "clowns" that would be able to produce "fake" licences?

I doubt whether the would be "hackers" would be interested in much of the information on this forum...so rest easy...

Hmmm big question is now for those like myself who couldn't get through whether we want to take a leap of faith in trusting the security of information on the Census site or whether Paper Forms will be made easily available now which will bypass the open internet.

Hackers initiating "Identity theft"  comes to mind with the information individuals supplied.

I fully expected something to happen  so was not surprised.  That is why I chose to do a paper form in lieu of doing online.

I dont see why the head of ABS should resign at all.

The correct action was taken to close down the site when the 4th hacker attack happened.  I choose to believe what the ABS people have said..no point in lying as will be found out eventually.

One thing I am pretty sure of;   I doubt we will be voting online until it can be made foolproof against hackers

The head of ABS should resign because somebody has to take responsibility for the massive stuffup.

Based on the Westminster system, the relevant Minister is also responsible.

Responsibility for things going wrong lies at the top, not with some outsider (alleged hackers) or with more junior staff. US President Harry S Truman had a sign on his desk saying "The buck stops here" for that very reason.

You are right about online voting.

This stuff up is like an elephant floating on its back !. Head of ABS should be sacked, this was an incident waiting to happen, even 'Blind Freddy' could see this coming after the stuff up with the phone request line.

Another costly mistake that the taxpayers will have to suffer. What a joke ABS has become.

The 'hacker' is a dumb excuse !!!
