I feel obliged to say anyone who has suffered from a bad back or any problems especially in the lower back or new to exercise, should NOT do those stretching exercises.

I am inclined to agree with you having had three herniated discs.
Each person is an individual and needs one to one treatment.
The physiotherapist Paula Nutting in this video does say if you have a medical problem to consult with your doctor doing these exercises .... I find them very good.
