$6 bottle of Coles red takes out top honours

A $6 bottle of Coles red wine has just won a double gold medal in an international wine competition.

The St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon, sold exclusively by Coles, was pitted against some of the world's most prestigious labels in a blind tasting at the Melbourne International Wine Competition and took out the coveted “double gold” medal.

The $6 bottle is only available through Coles-owned outlets: Liquorland, First Choice and Vintage Cellars.

I don't mind a drop of red sometimes , particularly with a pasta meal. I always buy wines that are less than $6.oo and I have found theyare really good (to my taste anyway). Can't see the point of paying more for a wine that you probably won't like.

Tried some so-called french wines at a wine tasting some time ago and was astounded at how bad they were. Give me a good old Ozzie wine anyday.

Haha Ben, how does this stack up to WA wines?

Looks like I'll have to do a lot of tasting on this trip!

That sounds like it's hard to beat, but, there is always the chance the judges were nodding off Reagan!

It appears Ben, that particular wine does not go on sale until next month. You can get other vintages of the same brand now but not that one. Just checked with my wine guy.

Great certainly going to give this one a try. Nothing better than a good Aussie red with the price to match.

My hubby went to buy some of this wine this afternoon but it was all sold out by 9.30am this morning. I wonder what the price will be when they restock?

Hi Robi

On the liquorland website , it says the wine wil only be available from 01 August

It's the 2016 vintage that won

The perfect well priced pizza night wine, it offers black cherry, plum and cranberry aromas with a soft easy going finish.

The MIWC judging panel was unanimous in rating the St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 as worthy of a gold medal - a rare consensus on quality that is marked by the award of “double gold” status.
The 2016 vintage will be available instore & online from 1st of August 2017.

Well that's good news Raphael, but confusing since he was given a different story at Liquorland. Someone had their wires crossed. Black cherry, plum and cranberry aromas sound good. Thanks for info :)

I bought this wine today at Liquorland...they only had the 2017 vintage.  Said the 2016 was all gone...??

It's probably a Hunter Valley wine.

It comes from the South Eastern Wine Region

Coles' St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, sold at Liquorland, First Choice and Vintage Cellars, is made from grapes from the Murray Darling and Riverina region.

Sorry Sandi, because it rated so well as regards taste, I just assumed it must have come from the premium wine region of Australia, the Hunter Valley.

You would have to be joking, Old Man and I'm a Novocastrian.  Besides having Drayton Wines in the Family,

We have a special wine we both like and always get on special for around $6...sometimes even cheaper.  It is a big seller.

I have acid reflux and i drink white wine, i can tell from the first sip weather if  it will agree with me or not, it may give me a heart burn feeling if it doesnt, i find the $7 (when its on special from Coles) Wolf Blass red label is very smooth

You should try some of our WA wines, we have some of the best!

Might be an allergy that comes with age or over indulging in youth

I am finding that I can't quite finish a bottle of red in one sitting anymore

some days I feel ill after one glass But after a couple more I feel fine

Must be the Q10, it brings on diarrhea, from both ends.
