Maxwell Sanders treated his two-bedroom home in Warragul like a "palace". When he moved out of the public housing unit earlier this year he made sure it was near spotless.

"I was a very good tenant. Very houseproud," he said.

Maxwell Sanders was given a $2000 bill for cleaning costs when he moved out of his public housing unit in Warragul, he took it to VCAT and then paid only $50.

The value of taking pics when vacating a rented property.

Sounds like a petty bureaucrat trying to justify their existence, at the expense of the most vulnerable.

I wish Maxwell had been one of my tenants...I would have paid him to stay..

In my case, 3 months of trying to get the buggers out, then the cleanup ,the repairs and the fight to get money from them...then they are off to find another place to trash...

It's a case of landlord beware, people are so clever with references and the gift of the gab, even the most experienced are taken in, and you wouldn't believe their occupation...!

People like Maxwell, are a rental property owners dream, I'm pleased he had a good outcome.

Were you too cheap to use an agent to manage youtr rental.

I gave a down on their luck family a chance to get back on their feet...

I was the real estate agent sunshine...Any more questions?

a poor one at that

if my agent didnt do his job, he'd be replaced as soon as the tenants werent out the door after defualt and their bond confiscated

And you didnt have landlords insurance protection to cover damages? - some agent

hahaha

oh and to quote a weird one - why do you need to have more than 1 house ?

Cranky - Did you charge them rent to help them get back on their feet?

Well, Carlos aren't you the mighty wonder...in a small town, 30 years ago there was no such thing and a mans word was his bond..indeed I was a very successful agent. :)

I will ignore the add on...

And no Barak, I actually gave them a fortnights grace...and time to pay off the bond..

mm

Poor man - what a rip off but I'm glad he stood up for his rights. One of my neighbours lives in a Housing Commission home and they are going to paint the whole place out for her, install a new kitchen and put in new carpet, and she doesn't pay a cent. I told her to be careful as they might be considering to move her out to a small unit as her's is a 3 bedroom home.

So - why did he move out?  Nursing Home?  No one ever relinquishes Public Housing to my knowledge?

Why should a single person Hola - be entitled to a 3-bedroom home - when there are desperate families on long waiting lists???

The article geomac gave us a link to says "Mr Sanders is now living with his son in Dandenong North."

Foxy -  I totally agree with you, single people should not be occupying 3 bedroom houses. Where I lived it was quite common.

I had a rental property when I lived in Victoria and ALL the tenents I had (a single mother, Asian students, and two AFP) ended up using their bond money for cleaning expenses. Utter pigs!

Yes you have to be lucky these days to have good tenants and as Cranky says

"People like Maxwell, are a rental property owners dream"

Landlord insurance is good and really a necessity, however, there are excesses and each aspect of claim is challenging...
