Comic book legend a victim of elder abuse

Where are the Incredible Hulk or Iron Man when you need them for protection? The creator of these Marvel Comics characters and others, 95-year-old Stan Lee, may be wondering that very thing after his personal adviser was arrested.

Businessman Keya Morgan, 42, is being investigated over reports of elder abuse after he allegedly ‘inserted’ himself into Mr Lee’s life, following the death of the Marvel mogul’s wife, Joan, last year.

The reports accuse Mr Morgan “of taking advantage of Mr Lee’s impaired hearing, vision and judgement, moving him from his long-time family home and preventing family and associates from contacting him”.

The arrest last week was for allegedly filing a false police report. Mr Morgan is said to have called emergency services to report burglars in his house, when in fact they were detectives and a social worker checking on the welfare of Mr Lee, who is estimated to be worth nearly $70 million.

Do you think widowed people are more vulnerable to financial elder abuse?

i dont know of anyone in this situation,   but im sure it goes on,   elderly people living on there own are easy prey,     a lot would be lonely,  and it would be quite easy to make friends  with them,   probably wouldnt take much to invite someone in for a cuppa,     they could worm themsrlves into that persons confidence,   and find out their comings and goings,    what they had woirth stealing,     a lot of the elderly are not  savy to what is going on around them,     only have to read of all the ones that are taken in by these shonky  dealers,     FIX your roof?     $6000 later,   the roof is still the same,   and your bank balance is zero,       TELSTA calling,    pay me a $1000 ill fix your computer,   AND it is not unknown for some of these peoples homes to take advantage,

Elder abuse here on YLC every day Cats - sad huh?

you said it FOX,   trouble is the abusers on here are allowed to get away with it,

The sad thing is that often elders affected by this are aware on some level that they are being taken advantage of but accept it anyway.

Maybe because they are lonely, or maybe even because they like to have someone at their beck and call, who knows?

It's come to my attention many elders in Australia are taken advantage of, mainly by relatives rather than strangers. Most elders are too scared to say anything because of repercussions.

Not meaning to compare countries, but I have not heard of this happening a lot in Italy where I grew up.

Sadly Ray, maybe Italy is not immune.

On the whole, elder abuse in Italy, with a prevalence rate around 10–14%, is characterized by more female victims, especially in the oldest age groups. The risk of psychological abuse is highest, but the level of financial mistreatment is also high.

Source.

Trouble is, as I have found,  when it is reported, nothing is done.

Yep, I've found that too Nan Norma.
