Anybody suffering from the flu?

A Melbourne girl, 13, dies from the flu as national death toll nears 300

I wish anyone suffering from this deadly flu a quick recovery.  Keep squeezing your fresh orange juice every day, better than Vitamin C capsule IMO.

Yes, a really bad year.

Hopefully sufferers will stay home from work to avoid spreading it even further.

So true RnR and schools give out attendance awards! I would rather see them getting merit certificates for staying home instead of spreading disease while soldiering on as some sort of badge of honour.

I just got over the flu despite the flu shot. I squeezed my orange juice this morning and keeping my fingers crossed I don't catch another flu variety. It's hard to avoid contaminated people in a congested environment.

R&R, I have been served in shops by so many young people with the flu working in casual jobs where they don't get sick and holiday pay. All casual work should include holiday and sick pay. Big business makes enough money.

Yes, four members of the family affected with two hospitalised.  Flu shots arrived too late.

So sorry to hear that LJ, hope all will be well.

toot2000,

That is kind of you.  We all get out flu vax around here.  Murphy's Law applied in this case.

RnR was spot-on regarding people staying home and not risking spreading the flu.

the daughter of a friend...she was aged 71....died last week from it....healthy lady too.

No

You should be aware that staff in coffee shops, restaurants, pubs, hotels, clubs do not disinfect the bars, do not disinfect the tables and certainly do not disinfect the poker machines nor do they bar patrons from coughing and sneezing. This also goes for school classrooms, public transport etc , etc. .  Washing your hands thoroughly is very important. I had a flu shot last year but acted too late for this year. The dreadful bug got me, attacked the lungs. GP put me on a 5-day course of penicilin and anti-biotics plus another 7-days of different type of anti-biotics. Gradually the flu subsided but the respiratory system recovery is very slow and yes, I finally got my flu shot. In 7-days, if all is well,  I will have the vaccine shot to prevent pneumonia.

Those antibiotics are useless against the flu. Flu is a virus and impervious to medication designed to attack bacteria.

Antibiotics would have been given for secondary infections that attack opportunisticall when your imune system is busy fighting something else.

I agree with the hand washing though. Plain soap and water is great - no need for expensive hand sanitisers or gels with antibacterial properties. Keep your hands and fingers away from your eyes, nose and mouth unless you have washed them first. Don't eat or drink anything (outside home and even when coming home from outside) unless you have washed hands first. Use the wipes at supermarkets to clean the trolley especially the handlebars nd the hook for your bags - you don't now who last used it or whether they were sick!

Taking positive action can greatly reduce the risk of getting sick. And if you haven't had the flu shot there is still time before the peak flu season hits and there are plenty available now.

Arvo, council street cleaners no longer use isinfectant too. Everything is all about cutting back to make a mass profit. The majority of staff in the hospitality industries don't get holiday and sick pay. That's why staff work with colds and flu.  I am sick of so many commuters on congested public transport coughing and spluttering all over everyone. I am sure they intentionally spread their germs.

KSS, antibiotics do work on secondary infections that are brought on by the flu as well as pneumonia. Doctors do know when to prescribe them. You can blame the meat industry for pumping livestock with antibiotics. All meat eaters that don't consume organic meat are full of antibiotics. Animal protein is full of antibiotics and people don't need it.

Jackie read what I wrote not what you think I wrote. I said antibiotics don't work on the flu virus and would have been prescribed for secondary opportunistic infections.

And Australia has not used antibiotics as growth promoters on animals for decades. They are used for treating sick animals only.

Rather than blaming farmers I suggest you look at the supermarket shelves and all the products that now contain unnecessary antibacterial properties, cloths, cleaning fluids, body and hand washes etc all of which are totally unnecessary and are simply training bacteria how to become immune to them.

I wonder if all those who refused to have a flu shot (lot of discusson on here earlier in year) have decided to have one?

Ardnaher, I had one this year but if I catch the flu again this year. I won't bother with one next year.

I am lucky enough to have never had the flu in my life.  Not even in 1956 Uk epidemic.

My sister made that mistake and got the flu first time ever when she got vaccinated at age 74. And does still get it mildly she says each year even though goes and gets each years vaccine.

Hubbie also has never had it.

We both take Vit C 1000mg daily along with garlic well before we even met.

Neither of us get colds either.  I did get tonsillitius and so did he as kids. Maybe thats why or just genes.

Berry, lucky you. It must be in the genes.

have had the flu shot every year for the last 8 years and never got it...BUT...prior to that had an extremely bad dose of it and lost half hearing in one ear and 3/4 in the other one...now wearing two aids...there are side effects sometimes  hearing loss is one of them.

I can't help but notice that a lot of people say they have 'the flu' when it's really just a cold.  Not implying anyone on here is doing that, just that I've noticed it with various acquaintances over the years.

I've never had 'the flu' since getting the shot on a yearly basis.  I think I might have had it once, but it might have just been a really bad cold. It did come complete with chills and fever, nasty, but I don't really think it was influenza.  Took a while to get over it though, I have to say.

Our local doctor here is a hoot.  I think he's channelling Doc Martin of TV fame.  Hubby presented with a really bad cold and got the rather snarky response, "You have a cold, what do you expect me to do about it!"  LOL   He must have been fed up that everyone with a sniffle was rocking up with 'the flu'.

we get the flu vac every year,   get an odd head cold now and then,   but no flu,  there is no avoiding people who cough and splutter over you,   supermarkets,   even the doctors surgery,   all full of people coughing,     all the migrants coming here with god knows what deseases,   [and im NOT anti migration,  ]   just stating a fact,

Best defence is keeping your own immune system healthy, when are people going to learn to eat more fruit and veggies and stop eating packaged junk. Also keep yourself chemical free and use natural products. Olive Leaf extract every day will help as well as Oregano oil as preventive measures. Recently read an article about how viruses keep mutating and the vaccine makers cannot keep up, so your chances of the flu vaccine working is very small as there are many strains and you are only protected against a few that change every year.

Yes

I read that lab testing has confirmed the H3N2 influenza strain has mutated, potentially impacting the effectiveness of that strand of the 2019 flu vaccines.

But at the best the flu vaccine only protects you from 4 strains of the flu and there are many.
