Apple fined $41m for deliberately slowing down old iPhones

Apple has been fined $41 million for deliberately slowing down old phones, reports B&T.

The fine, handed out by the French competition watchdog, is not specifically for slowing down the devices, but for not informing customers that certain updates could slow their phones.

In 2017 Apple admitted it slowed old iPhone 6, SE and 7 models so as to “prolong the life” of devices.

However, the French watchdog found that Apple never informed customers that “installing iOS updates (10.2.1 and 11.2) could slow down their devices” and that Apple “committed the crime of deceptive commercial practice by omission”.

The French group decried Apple for not allowing users to revert their phones to previous, faster versions of operating systems, leaving many to “change their batteries or even buy a new phone”.

Apple still applies the “performance throttling” technology to newer iPhone models, but only if detects a performance concern.

Apple has reportedly accepted the fine.

I have never liked Apple products and would never buy another -- -- I like Galaxy

LOL PlanB ... I'm an Apple "oldie", using their products since 1986.

Never had a problem with Apple ... from their original computers through to their later laptops, tablets and phones.

My old iPhone 6 went the same way as the top phone in that picture, screen lifting like that.  I thought it was the battery swelling or something.   It still worked but I wasn't game to use it.

I still bought another iPhone.   I like it, but it's bigger and doesn't fit in my hand as comfortably as the old one.  I've dropped it a couple of times.

Hubby has an old iPhone 6, and it's still going strong.  He had a bit of a glitch with it but took it to a phone shop and some kid just out of school was able to put it right for him.  LOL.   He thought he had picked up a virus but the kid said, "Not with an iPhone you haven't."

If they did that to the old mobile iPhones imagine what they and other telcos and computer companies have done to your old computer systems. To name some, Vodafone, HP, Microsoft, Windows 7, 8 and 10. Ever, since Windows hijacked the OS by not supplying OS CD//DVD support disk when you purchase a new computer its been extorting service fees from users  after the warranty runs out. I had a HP Notebook that began to falter one day after the warranty ran out. HP offered to send the laptop to Singapore free of cost to me to rectify the problem. After a month they sent me an email that my HD was faulty and it would cost me $2,000 to have it fixed or I could buy a new laptop from them at a special price of over $1,600. I declined and requested the return of the laptop. Eventually it was returned but, without the HD, without the Windows 10 OS I had, in fact they wiped everything off and sent me back an empty HD and OS shell.

Scoundrels !

I have changed over to Linux  OS on a spare laptop.

And why wouldn't Apple just accept the fine. $41m is nothing to them. They had revenue of $260.2 BILLION in 2019 with net income (profit) of $55.3 BILLION.

All I see is all these electronic devices (large and small) too soon, as land fill.. Before I leave this planet, I would like to see all these multi billion dollar corporations expire!! All they want to do is continually flog so-called up-graded products, and make an insane amount of profit .. $$ ..

They have no regard for our environment!!

The old landline telephone lasted decades.. a smart phone lasts by comparison about 10 minutes;(

This is my 3rd IPhone.. It's the SE model..

I am dreading the thought of adding more garbage to our land and forking out thousands of $$ for my next piece of electronic junk!!

Well you don't have to buy iPhones for a start. There are many good smartphones these days that do not cost thousands.

And secondly, what are you going to do with all the people who work at these 'multi billion dollar corporations', their suppliers and manufacturers when you get rid of them?

Response to KSS and anyone else:

Are you referring to the employees of these multimillion $$ / Multi National Corporations that set up factories in Asia and take advantage of the cheap labour's of of these workers, who (under poor working conditiona), manufacture an IPhone for about $10 per unit??
