Apple fined $41m for deliberately slowing down old iPhones
Apple has been fined $41 million for deliberately slowing down old phones, reports B&T.
The fine, handed out by the French competition watchdog, is not specifically for slowing down the devices, but for not informing customers that certain updates could slow their phones.
In 2017 Apple admitted it slowed old iPhone 6, SE and 7 models so as to “prolong the life” of devices.
However, the French watchdog found that Apple never informed customers that “installing iOS updates (10.2.1 and 11.2) could slow down their devices” and that Apple “committed the crime of deceptive commercial practice by omission”.
The French group decried Apple for not allowing users to revert their phones to previous, faster versions of operating systems, leaving many to “change their batteries or even buy a new phone”.
Apple still applies the “performance throttling” technology to newer iPhone models, but only if detects a performance concern.
Apple has reportedly accepted the fine.
