Are the Commonwealth Games still relevant?
The Commonwealth Games start on the Gold Coast in Queensland on Wednesday. Should we care?
The fanfare has been less than loud, except for when Channel Nine’s accreditation was suspended after it broadcast footage of Saturday’s opening ceremony dress rehearsal and when syringes were found in the athletes’ village.
Perhaps the organisers didn’t want us to have Games fatigue before the first event. Do you remember where the 2014 Commonwealth Games were? Did you know we won 49 gold medals, 42 silver and 46 bronze in Glasgow in 2014? But finished second on the medal tally. Do you know who topped the table?
Do you know that the Games on the Gold Coast are “the first multisport event ever where there will be the same number of medals for women as for men?” Did you know there will be 133 women’s and 133 men’s events, and nine mixed open events? Sports lovers will watch but it’s a B-grade competition that struggles to excite. By the way, it was England who won most medals in 2014.
Thank God they are almost over !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
