Are the Commonwealth Games still relevant?

The Commonwealth Games start on the Gold Coast in Queensland on Wednesday. Should we care?

The fanfare has been less than loud, except for when Channel Nine’s accreditation was suspended after it broadcast footage of Saturday’s opening ceremony dress rehearsal and when syringes were found in the athletes’ village.

Perhaps the organisers didn’t want us to have Games fatigue before the first event. Do you remember where the 2014 Commonwealth Games were? Did you know we won 49 gold medals, 42 silver and 46 bronze in Glasgow in 2014? But finished second on the medal tally. Do you know who topped the table?

Do you know that the Games on the Gold Coast are “the first multisport event ever where there will be the same number of medals for women as for men?” Did you know there will be 133 women’s and 133 men’s events, and nine mixed open events? Sports lovers will watch but it’s a B-grade competition that struggles to excite. By the way, it was England who won most medals in 2014.

Thank God they are almost over !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DITTO  !!

I've loved the Games. Such an amazing day today, the last. Will be sad when they're over.

I'm with you RnR

But it is a shame that sport has become professional/elite and opened to gambling.

It was much better when it was grass roots/amater.

Well..I  didn't watch all of it..but couldn't resist the Rhythmic Gymnastics. Our girls were just wonderful..no gold..but certainly golden performances...

Have to admit..I did have a favourite..Amy Kwan from Malaysia was delightful..she won Malaysia's fifth gold in gymnastics...

The control Amy had over the ribbon was incredible.

He could have been a hero

Michael Shelley of Australia passes Callum Hawkins of Scotland after he collapsed

He is a hero!!!

Yes..he is a hero..

I agree Toot

he could have helped Callum

Thought the closing ceremony very boring  in parts and in the end changed channels and watched MKR.

I only watched cycling and gymnastics ..for me they could forget the opening and closing ceremony ... just polution of atmosphere with the fireworks.

He showed the true Aussie spirit which is win at any cost. Bloody arsehole.

It’s been reported Hawkins asked not to be assisted because he knew any help would see him disqualified and cost him a chance at a medal. In this case, bravery out-muscled common sense.

Ok I stand corrected.

So?  No one thinks the finale' of the Games was the biggest "f..k up - "mess" in Games History?

I didn't watch the closing ceremony -  the "opening" was cringeworthy enough!  How this could have happened was/is abismal!  Makes Australia the laughing stock of the world!

Not ONE wonderful athlete parading for their country - in their well deserved glory!?  WHY?  What a joke the whole scenario was!

Shame Australia - shame!!

Oh and I heard (like most) it was all orchestrated/planned by a U.S. company???  Another joke!  Like we do not have enough PR companies here that could have organised/planned it??????

Peter Beatty needs to be sacked - NOW!!!!! ... oh and I read he got "zillions" of dollars for being on the Board for the past 4 years - organisng this whole total fiasco!!

Pay ya' money back Peter - you should be ashamed!!!! Most Aussies are!!!!!

Must admit I have NO interest in the games AT ALL but I thought the closing from what I heard on the news was just dreadful and robbed Fearnley of his last chance of glory -- a bloody disgrace

I really admire Kurt Fearnley’s attitude.

Australian flagbearer Kurt Fearnley says the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony broadcast gaffe must be put into perspective, saying there are issues affecting people with disabilities that are more worthy of "firing up" about.

The 13-time Paralympic medallist had already praised organisers for integrating the para-sports program into the wider Games event, saying it was time for Australia to embrace inclusion of people with disabilities. “The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation nailed that. We have just kicked so many goals independently, in the Paralympic movement but the Commonwealth Games took a big leap forward in the last two weeks," Fearnley said.

"To put it in perspective, we nailed those two weeks," he said. "It was the best two weeks of my life — the best event that I've ever been a part of."

Source.

Yes Kurt Fearnley’s attitude IS wonderful but still a darn shame it finished as it did

Peter Beatty was made Chairman of Aust. Rugby League and didn't even know who the Cronulla Sharks were and has mistaken Barcelona Football jersey for the Newcastle Knights. He's a total tool. He needs to be sacked immediately.

The Commonwealth Games is no longer about the athletes. It's about the lighting, the singers and a whole lot of other crapola.

You may have a point Micha. I am a bit disappointed with the way it all ended.

The amount of money spent on these games could be well spent HELPING those that need help --

All games..art..culture are inherent to a well balanced society. Without these things our society becomes a bland and desolate place..inhabited by dull and uninteresting people..

People will always need to be "helped"..but it is not only necessary to feed their stomachs..we also need to feed the soul...
