Arthritic Knees and too low toilets - painful rising outcome!

Looking to replace toilet seat thought maybe a way to make it higher surely in these days of arthritic knees and found one in Australia looked like could be the one but no price.  Emailed and got back will quote. When it arrived nearly fell off my chair in sheer horror. Not kidding. $1019.20 all up.  And send money first.

Aidacare NSW SA QLD TAS etc is the supplier can look them up.

Not really a clear quote as asked for with and without arms and highest of two heights. Brackets alone $66 and the other in two parts. And not clear if one seat or two so there is that.

link to actual seat quoted at $1,109.20 -

But googled without +au and got Wal Mart in USA and similar prices for similar item $21 US so plus postage wont be that much more.

Also they sell Wayfair products with links as sponsored so had a look and up came - visiting from Australia - go here - Oz website but guess what - dont sell these either.

What is it - rip off the elderly, the disabled and poor in Australia or what - seems to me a disgrace. Some poor old sod just may get caught by these rip off merchants. And pay.

I almost did a couple of years back. Got one huge high step at the front and thought need a grab rail. So none in local hardware, asked around, said go to this place fit them for the elderly. Yep first experience quoted $380. Found my builder bloke who had replaced wooden windows for me - and he said can do it for $60.

Seems a whole industry devoted to ripping off the elderly.

You have to be very careful - ask for Seniors discount they say, must mean red light for rip these silly old buggers off.

So watch out if you too looking to raise the loo seat a bit!

May just have to put it in "too hard basket" and get normal seat but do wish they did one that is not plastic so cold  enough to mak your teeth rattle in winter. Ha Ha - must be some sort of new type of plastic that feels warmer by now dont you think?

I wonder how Asians and Middle Easterners manage their toilets when they get old and frail and the legs get wonky? Imagine having to crouch over a hole in the ground with arthritic knees.

I suppose Robi that cleaning would be a breeze...just get out the hose and woofah it is done.

True radish but not thinking about the practicalities of cleaning. Talking about the difficulty of squatting so low when your hips and knees are buggered. Not to mention getting up again. How on earth do they do it?

Maybe the Asian people have a block and tackle and lower them down over the hole ;).  I will do some research and see if I can find an answer for you.

Very surprised to find a number of sites where it is explained in detail how to use an asian toilet...too funny!

Robiconda

Having used that type of toilet I find them a lot more comfortable than our seat toilets ....... I will never sit on a toilet seat in a public toilet. At home it may be a bit hard to read the newspapers on :)

So funny. A dear friend of ours was so excited to go on a trip to Indonesia with his partner. Poor Barry had very painful knees. When it was time to use the crouch down loo, he squatted down and the knees locked. He had to yell out for Hans to come and help him. He said he was so embarrassed as the locals were all staring at him when he eventually got out of the loo.

Asians use squat toilets all their lives and so are constantly using those muscles and joints whereas we westerners rarely (if ever) assume the "squat" position. When we do try to do it (especially when older) everything just siezes up - uncomfortable AND embarrassing. Getting down is not to bad, but most of us oldies would need lifting equipment to get back up again.
