Aus Age Pension & a non Aus spouse.

Last year I decided to have an extended visit to Ireland where I can stay with friends & relatives. Now a  question has arisen which I'd like to open up in case some kind member has experienced this same thing.

It concerns the possibility of getting married. My potential wife would be an Irish woman and not an Aus citizen.

Were this to eventuate how would it affect my Age Pension?

I can see the combined income & asset rules but they apply to couples who are both Aus citizens.

If you, or someone you know, has been through this I'd love to hear from you. Also if you know the Centrelink ruling around this question.

may all be well where you are,

I know a chap who married an American woman. DIMA (Immigration Dept) made him sign papers to fully support her for 2 years on his meagre salary. Cant say what happened after that as she returned home before the time lapsed.

Look on the Immigration Dept website under Partner Visas etc

If you marry you will lose 25% because you will be transferred to half the married rate. There are no exceptions. I am living in Malta, my birthplace and married a Ukrainian woman who draws a very small pension and I declared my change in status, immediately losing about $350 per month. They assume your wife is receiving the same as an Australian pension. Complaints and queries were ignored. Be warned.

Gozitano, thank you. This is exactly the information I need to gain. Sorry to hear you lost by doing the right thing (hmm typical Govt eh...support the rich, tax the ordinary citizen). I wish you every happiness with your wife in Malta which is a very civilised place to live out your life.

Gozitano - why dont you spearate and go back to full single pension

Love Malta and its people - lots of Russian and Ukranian women moving there and to Cyprus in search of love and a better life
