Aussies expect more droughts and floods

Eight in 10 Australians (81 per cent) are now concerned about climate change resulting in more droughts and flooding according to a new benchmark report released on Wednesday by the Australia Institute.

The annual Climate of the Nation benchmark report has tracked Australian attitudes on climate change for over a decade. This is the second Climate of the Nation report produced by The Australia Institute, after being produced for a decade by the Climate Institute.

The report found that:

  • Eight in 10 (81 per cent) Australians are concerned that climate change will result in more droughts and flooding, up from 78 per cent in 2018
  • Majority of Australians (68 per cent) agree that the Government should plan for an orderly phase-out of coal so that workers and communities can be prepared
  • Majority of Australians (54 per cent) reject the idea that Australia should not act on climate change until other major emitters like US and China do so (25 per cent agree we should not act, 21 per cent neutral/don't know)
  • Almost two thirds of Australians (64 per cent) think the country should have a national target for net-zero emissions by 2050, similar to the United Kingdom
  • Most Australians blame increasing electricity prices on the excessive profit margins of electricity companies (57 per cent, up from 55 per cent) or the privatisation of electricity infrastructure (55 per cent, up from 52 per cent).

The report was launched by Zali Steggall, the federal member for Warringah.

“This latest report shows that Australians support far more ambitious climate and energy policies than the Federal Government is currently delivering,” Ms Steggall said.

“Australians are rightly concerned about more extreme heat waves, droughts and bushfires and they want the Morrison Government to show leadership on climate change and do more to prepare for the impacts that are already locked in.”

What do you think? Should Australia prepare for more natural disasters if climate change is not addressed?

If 81% of Australians believe in Climate Change, why isn’t our government doing anything about it? Does democracy lead the way or do our political fools for representatives have the say about our destiny? I think we all know the answer, sadly.

Hi Ny19. If our govt. isn't doing anything about clmate change, and we all believe in the fact of human induced emissions , then we have the responsibility to do it individually. Thats you and me and the 81 % of believers. It can't be up to governments, it has to be up to us to change our lives and lead the ignorant to follow before the disaster ahead engulfs us. What are you doing personally to become carbon neutral? I want to become totally carbon neutral as well. I just don't know how to do it. Help me. It is a fact we have 12 years left before we all die because of Co2 pollution.

# Me too I need help!!!

I do not want to be spoon fed by my gov’mint any more. I want to help myself. I want to know what I can do NOW to save my skin.

The 81% are not that committed to the issue that they are prepared to change voting intentions, therefore the government will follow its ideological priorities

Unfortunately true Farside, although I think that a lot of people get panicked by the media, which are mainly owned by the conservatives, so they created these fears of a Labour landslide so people got scared, - like at the Tampa election, and scared people vote conservative.

However, it has been long understood by climate scientists that the effects of global warming will include a stage of burning, more and more, of the world's vegetation, - which adds to the already record high percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, so increasing the warming faster,  - it would be more sensible for people to be more scared about that when voting, - when all the vegetation is gone, so will most of us have gone, - that is a much more important issue.

Perhaps next time people will remember and not allow themselves to be panicked into voting so unwisely.

If you care about the effects of climate change get out and support the students striking for climate action on Friday 20th September.

Google or GetUp will tell you where your local rallying point is.

What good will this waste of student's time do?

Advance australia is making Getup irrelevant

No Thanks.  Absolute waste of time and energy. But don't let it hinder the virtual signallers who continue to generate carbon emissions, many of whom will drive or be driven by carbon emmitting cars to the protest, use mobile phones and eat from plastic containers. At least vegans put their beliefs into practice unlike the hysterical 'climate crisis' brigade.

As a former environmental consultant, I despaired at the lack of knowledge and understanding of the general public and our political masters about this complex topic.

Now, I have changed my views. Climate change is inevitable now, and there is little that we (humans) can do to curb the effects. We simply have to adapt to them - they are inevitable.  There is no doubt that we have contributed to the changes, but there it is, argue as much as you want to but facts are facts. Too late to go back now.

Actually I see positives, as I have reached the conclusion that increases in carbon dioxide are actually beneficial for many ecosystems. Historically, levels were several time higher than now, and we are actually close to a minimum level ever. Plants, especially, will thrive and reptilian herbivores, insects and many others will do very well.

BUT, humans will probably (almost) die out, along with many other species. Collateral damage? It won't be a fun ride, and I am sorry for our decendants, but again, there it is.

So, no kicking and screaming for me. I'll be long gone. Happy in my understanding of the bigger picture, I intend to ignore it all and enjoy the life I have left.

I understand Janus, the task seems too hard, easier to give up, although I don't know how that helps those of us who still fight the good fight, but at least please do not vote Conservative in your dieing years.

In regard to the bigger picture, if you have it, better to not stop fighting for the good

So Ms Steggle did her research on the beach at Manly then?

Australia has always had natural disasters going back tens of thousands of years. Aboriginal people know how to deal with it. That is not the issue.

The real issue is the degredation of the landscape as a result of over population. People build on flood plains then complain when it floods, they build on the cliffs' edge then complain when a combination of king tide and severe storm undercuts the cliff face. Land clearing for both housing and food cultivation is another issue.

Unless there is a concerted effort to reduce the population (of Australia or anywhere else) no amount of research, shutting coal mines, solar pannals or electric cars will make the slightest difference.

Note also Ms Steggle talks the big talk, but has yet to implement ANY individual changes to protect the environment even in her own neighbourhood!

According to scientists in Zurich planting trees is the fastest and cheapest way to deal with climate crisis.

The scientists in Zurich are right, Australia could reduce its exposure to extreme weather by immediatly stopping all tree clearing and starting a program of tree planting.  China and India are both increasing their forest covers as they have seen the devastating effects of clearing trees. (they have a long way to go though)

Tree clearing results in faster water run-off, resulting in erosion and faster drying out.  Not much water reaches the underground water reservoirs.  Trees and forests store water and the sun pulls up that water again into the athmosphere which produces humidity, clouds and rain.  We all know the drier the weather the more extreme the temperatures, hot and cold!  We just had our coldest ever September temperatures in Queensland and also devastating fires.  Wake up Australia, don't blame climate change, plant trees!

Greens are scare mongering; we cannot stop nature doing its thing; we can work to ease thru it though; we have many smart minds; dams, barriers can be built to start with ....

Before it gets to her head, the sooner Zali realises that the electorate used her to get rid of a really toxic Abbott, the better. Zali, or anyone else in Australia, or the whole of Australia, has no control over the world's climate. It is best if the Govt gets on with their promises to lower energy prices for the people and businesses - by developing more clean coal, gas and nuclear power stations as needed for each State at the very earliest. Otherwise, Morrison's Govt is beginning to look a bit like that of Turnbull, lot of talk and no action.

No such thing as clean coal, no such thing as safe nuclear, and no such thing as environmentally gas fracking either. There is already plenty of renewable energy available and more coming soon, we need to fix the infrastructure asap, stop subsidies to coal, oil and gas and use that money pronto.

Like all of you, the problem I have is climate change deniers. When are these fools going to be accountable for their inaction to the largest threat to humankind in history? I went to a parent teacher meeting at my grandaughters school. Her science teacher told me that we are at catrostrophic levels of human induced climate change and that human life will end in 12 years on planet earth. The science teacher told me that the level of Co2 in the atmosphere is now at 39%. She said that the rate of increase in Co2 emissions will mean an atmosphere that is close to 95% Co2 in 12 years time. She said we will ALL die. She said the ignorance of the unbelevers is criminal and is stopping us from saving our future life on this planet. This is the scientific view from an expertly trained professional... WHEN WILL YOU DENiERS WAKE UP?

What I would like to have is the name of that "science teacher" so that I can complain to the Department of Education for having such a twit teaching our children such BS and probably scaring the daylights out of them for no reason. If you have only 12 years to live, why sit here writing, go out and  live it up!!!

That teacher must be fired immediately - the level of CO2 in the air is .04% currently, besides lying about the level of CO2, the rest of her rubbish is simply brainwashing kids and creating anxiety i.e. child abuse.

That said, the real fools peddling such false climate change rubbish should stop producing children and hopefully disappear. Climate always changes naturally in cycles, and humans simply need to adapt to it.

Mary, have you any proof that that was said by that teacher?

It seems too far fetched for anyone, let alone a teacher, to mouth such nonsense, - sounds like someone over exaggerating beyond reality to attempt to prove the opposite, and indeed sounds like that highly anti-social argument technique called the Straw Man trick, but Mary, then the setter-up of the Straw Man, this unlikely idiot school teacher, would be you!

I reserve judgement that Mary is using the Straw Man argument because she thinks it easy to trick the stupid oldies,  unless Genuine solid proof, - not hearsay, is brought forward by Mary.

Thank goodness for the children and young people when so many elderly ones think they have a right to risk the future of their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc.

Imagine you may wrong with your denial, how can it possibly be worth the risk when it is easy enough to change now?

It is a pity some fear could not enter into the deniers’ heads!

You are absolutely right Paddington,,, we only have 12 years left until the atmosphere is 95% total co2... Then we will all die of asphixiation.. I was told that by a science teacher much more qualified than me. This is a world crises that governments and deniers cannot ignore! I cannot believe that the deniers refuse to acknowledge the impact of our carbon emissions. The deniers will be the causee of our downfall as a human race. It is stupidity and a crime against humanity. I have told my grandchildren that their lives will be short lived unless they march on State parliament this week! They are scared for their future, and rightly so! Governments need to act!!

Abe The science teacher. she is a profesional. She knows the effects of climate change. Who are we to question anything she states. She knows the science, the outcomes of humankind made emissions. She is waaaay more qualified than you or me. Fortunately we have teachers that tell the truth. She has woken me up that time is limited for all of us. 12 years of life left on earth.. I grieve that my grand daughter may not be able to live to see her 30th birthday. That is why I am in support of her marching on state parliament. My life is almost done, hers is starting...  The problem is climate change deniers refuse to see the facts... We will have an atmosphere composed of 95% Co2 in 12 years.. up from 38%....  If that is not shocking and not wakening up the deniers. Then what will? I despair of the ignorance and denial that some of us have. People need to know the truth!!!!

Shame on you ABE doubting Mary like that. I'm getting on my bike and making preparations for a hasty exit in 12 years' time.

Mary, as I have mentioned earlier, that is the Straw Man argument, creating a totally fictitious stupid person to ridicule that argument/speaking, the straw person is said to have.

Shame on you for trying to trick us oldies, and indeed the greatest trick is on you because your great great grandchildren will be ash, - as will be mine due to your stupidity.

Happy Now?

Mary is this you, your granddaughter and science teacher in the blue shirt and wearing glasses?

Mary, I have to step in here in great alarm and even anger.  This "science" teacher that you speak of should be sacked.  Such gross errors in what they are saying is very irresponsible and very worrying if they are this free with science in other areas that they are teaching.  They must've got their job under false pretences.

Let's run with some facts.  The make up of our atmosphere is approximately 80% Nitrogen and 20% Oxygen.  Carbon Dioxide makes up no more than 0.04% of the gas compostition.  Even if the CO2 levels were to double over the next twelve years, no human or any other creature dependant upon Oxygen for breathing would actually suffer adversely in normal life activities.  Health effects could be felt if the O2 content were to drop below 15%, but as that is very unlilkely as the higher CO2 levels with increases in temperature would accelerate plant growth and the absorption of CO2 and expiration of O2.  Remember that the oceans are responsible for producing approximately 20% of the respirable Oxygen.

Planet earth will remain habitable for humans for millions of years to come regardless of what we do with our industries at this point.  There is excessive scare mongering by people with a political agenda.  That political agenda is a far greater danger to future free life than any naturally occurring changes in the climate.

Even if all of the Australian coal mines and coal burning power stations were shut down this week, there would be no measurable change in the CO2 levels in the atmosphere over the next decade,  This not just my opinion but that also of the Australian Chief Scientist.  To do so would destroy our quality of life with thousands unable to survive as hospitals would be unable to continue, heating lost in our cold areas and refrigeration of perishable food stuffs failing.

Please report that "teacher" to their Principal for such irresponsible and gross errors.  Get some real text books on the weather, the atmosphere and climate and attempt to learn the truth about what really does influence our climate.  Maybe even enrol in a University course and learn to tell fact from fiction.  You have the normal nominlal life expectancy of a woman of your age to learn some more.  There is NO climate emergency.  It is a politcal construct.
