After spending weeks in French Polynesia — including time on the yacht of the movie mogul David Geffen along with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey — Mr. Obama will return to Chicago on Monday for his first public event as a former president.

Now Mr Pence is visiting us, will this improve relations with the USA?

I started this thread,  because I think we are better than being scared.....we need to be prepared. Like the Girl Guide I was, now in my 70s I still carry that thought in things I do or have done in life the best I can.

My 'widdle' ears!!

WoW!  Thea!  you have changed again, whoopie how petite and feminine you are .

Very elegant and petty I must say.....Never have done ballet, wanted to as a small girl, but I was told that I was a fairy elephant instead! Did a lot for my confidence as a child.

My step daughter and grand daughter do or have done ballet.

                                   avatar

Ballet is very popular now, my rugby playing granddaughter has switched to ballet from being the star performing rugby player in her mainly all boys rugby team - but they were worried about her getting injured as she was the fastest but smallest player. Her older brother has also switched to ballet and is loving it for the exercise and body strengthening.

Ann..I was a Jill of many things and a mistress of none..lol

I danced ballet until age 21..then gave up because first baby made an appearance..

I still sing however..can't hit high C any more so now at almost 60 I am a mezzo..down graded from soprano!!

Booked this morning for Don Quixote and Peter Pan at The Maj...

Rememer a few years ago watching little Miss 4 year old in the back of Don Quixote!    I have not been since we always seem to have something on around that time of year.   Do you take your grand children Thea?

I have many times Ann..they all danced some gave up at some stage for other pursuits..but at least they still appreciate it..

Hola and Ann on the previous page re British Police Officers carrying guns Poll. Only 25% of those in the police Union Poll wanted to carry guns routinely. UK has the lowest gun injuries in the EU and the police want to maintain their accord with the public but there are the specially trained Gun trained units. Maybe with the attack on Parliament they will appoint the specially trained and armed Police to those areas in the light of the Westminster attack.

Hi Vivity, yes this has been a debate for years about should Police in the UK carry guns, they are pretty vulnrable in this day and age with a truncheon.

Yes Ann I remember speaking to a Policeman in London about it he was adamant that they should not be armed, he pointed out handguns were banned in Britain & if anyone was found with one it was a mandatory sentence of 5 years gaol, so British criminals tended not to use them, but terrorists are a different kettle of fish now.

I remember going through Heathrow one time and armed riot police with automatic guns coming in, pretty efficient,  a plane load of rioting Football louts had just landed don't think they knew what had hit them as they were rounded up - bit frightening for everyone else tho'.

Gee even I would like to be able to own a gun -- I would learn to use it properly and you can bet your life I would NOT be afraid to use it IF someone threatened me -- all the criminals have them but thanks to Howard we no longer can have them -- they say ring 000 -- well bloody good luck with that!!!!

-- I used to have one in the 50s up to the 70s as I liked to carry a 22 when travelling just in case I came across a poor Animal suffering after a road accident -- in the 50s I used to shoot feral cats in my yard.   I always had a licence which was just a piece of paper given out from the local Police if you had a clear record.

PB,

My firearm was more part of my toolbox rather than a weapon. I was working in remote situations a fair bit and a rifle was just part of the gear. Must have had one for some 50 years.

I handed it in not so long ago as I no longer have a use for it Never been a hunter or rereational shooter and never felt I needed it for protection. Like you, put down a roo or two injured on the road. A bunny for the pot way back and a snake or three. I get a bit thing about snakes about the camp.

Take it easy.

Talking of guns, have a peep at this that happened four days ago here in WA..

Viv,

I go to water when guns are pointed at me, cry and sob, wet me pants, really pathetic.

Horrible people pointing guns at me started in my early days when a mate and myself decided to go back stage and charm what had only a few minutes before been a lightly clothed lady on stage. We found her dressing room and charged in to be met by a big ugly hairy thing toting a snub nosed 38 pointed straight at us who asked asked politely, well sort of, if he could help us.

Two blokes cannot get through the average door at the same time but we tried. Screeching and howling in terror.

Since then there have been a number of occasions where folks with guns appeared to have a desire to harm me with firearms of various calibres, usually because I ended up where I should not have been I guess.

I did a job overseas once, finished it according to me, went to catch a flight home and was stopped by a couple of blokes with guns who in a sort of friendly way asked me to stay a bit longer. It was another week before they, full of smiles, let me head home.

I have owned a firearm most of my life but but the casual way some folk wave them about can be disturbing to an average coward like me.

All good fun I guess. And yes all police should be armed these days.

Take it easy.

SD

Yes, SD I have friends who have licenses for guns too kept locked away as required but not belonging to Sporting Clubs they don't have hand guns which is the only way you can own a hand gun here in WA.

The question is about British Police carrying guns on duty unless there is a change by the police themselves 75% don't want to carry guns on duty, which is their own choice.

YEs if you are licenced you can have guns BUT they are locked away -- so what do you do if someone breaks in --

"Öh just a minute till I get the key and unlock this cabinet and load the gun" -- what a JOKE!

Yes SD, I am a more than a bit thingy about snakes.  See one and I am off like a rocket.

Won't even go near them in zoos.  We took the kids to the Reptile Park in NSW.

Bob and the kids all trooped in, I stayed locked in the car.

Sandi those are my feelings too about all reptiles!  LOL

Ah not mine Ann.  Only snakes for me.  Lizards I don't have any fear of.

Centipedes are my other pet hate.

LOL oh Sandi I am definately not a lizard or snake person, dragons either!!

Spiders and garden worms I do not worry about!

PB,

Mine was stored in the roof of the house and the bolt and ammo elsewhere, not much use as a defensive weapon.

SD

All dictators took the weapons off their people b4 take over

Talking of guns reminds me of when I lived in Fremantle, a elderly couple back then awoke to find a gang of people were systematically going along the street, taking plant pots of all shapes and sizes and hanging baskets from everyone's front garden.

My friends husband did not take kindle to that so when they came to his house, he had a shotgun at the reading and blasted the wall they were standing next to.  he said he had never seen people move so fast as that night.  Caught in his roses they must have got ripped apart and they left all the plants they had systematically left on the verge in the street for the vehicle to collect them!  LOL

He admitted he kept the gun under the bed and it was not licenced.

Super death benefit tax allowance a costly change

Changes to the tax allowance on super death benefits could prove costly.

Debbie McTaggart

Bob is outraged that the new super legislation will result in a change to the additional payment linked to death benefits. So, what does this mean for his super when he dies?

Q. Bob

Is it true that the Government, not content with ripping off pensioners, is now ripping off our widows by removing the anti-detriment clause from our superannuation?

A. First, an anti-detriment payment is an amount equivalent to the 15 per cent contribution tax paid on super contributions by the deceased member over their lifetime. This payment is in addition to the usual death benefits and can be paid to an eligible dependent when a lump sum death benefit is paid. An eligible dependent is considered a:

Spouse or former spouseChild (including an adult child)

Another thing Australia needs to take very seriously is domestic violence....

The Q&A questioner attacked on social media over her fear 'Islam will dominate Australia' is a retired Catholic school teacher who brings chocolates to her Muslim neighbours across the road. She also insists: 'I love the Muslim people, I pray for them.' Marianne O'Connell, 66, (pictured) sparked controversy when she appeared on the ABC television program (inset) on Monday night. She told host Tony Jones and the panel that she had heard statements coming from a mosque that 'Australia must submit' to Islam. The grandmother-of-seven was accused of 'lying and spreading fear' by some of the programs viewers.

On the topic of downsizing on the home page of this site, someone is talking about the security or the lack of it in Australia.  Turnbull is being critized.....they has a point to make.........he, Turnbull doesn't seem to be able to control much or get anything done......I wonder why the comment has been placed in the Downsizing column?

All those people chatting making comments about homes and getting into smaller abodes and never coming onto these sites? Weird but it takes all kinds.

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama’s extended post-presidential vacation is about to end. After spending weeks in French Polynesia — including time on the yacht of the movie mogul David Geffen along with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey — Mr. Obama will return to Chicago on Monday for his first public event as a former president.

His self-imposed silence since Inauguration Day will end with a series of events over the next four weeks. A Monday town hall-style meeting with students at the University of Chicago will be followed by an awards ceremony in Boston; a series of public remarks as well as private paid speeches in the United States and Europe; and an appearance at the Brandenburg Gate in Germany with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

And yet, Mr. Obama’s supporters, who have been waiting eagerly for the former president to respond to his successor’s accusations and policy reversals, are likely to be disappointed.
