Australia Post chief earns 10 times more than the PM

A Senate committee has denied a motion to keep secret the salaries of Australia Post executives.

It has since been revealed that Australia Post's Managing Director, Ahmed Fahour, took home a total salary of $5.6 million last year.

That's 10 times more than the Prime Minister earns.

The Senate committee, cahired by Victorian Senator James Paterson, released the information saying it was in the public interest.

"For your future reference, the committee emphasises that it will not agree to information being provided on a confidential basis outside of the estimates process unless a compelling case has been made that public disclosure would harm the public interest," wrote Senator Paterson.

It is beleived that Mr Fahour received a $4.4 million salary with bonus and $1.2 million in superannuation.

The Government-owned business enjoyed a $36 million profit in 2015-16, yet major job cuts occurred in 2015 due to the decreases in its traditional mail service.

Is it fair that Aust Post executives enjoy such high salaries while the workers 'on the floor' have their jobs cut? Should a man operating in a Government-owned business be receiving more than the PM?

Hi Micha , That varies according to policies . And you?

Mostly centre right, but like you depending on policies might change direction a little.

In which direction Micha

Totally right, haha

Tend to agree

I question the amount some get paid -- especially those such as footballers and other sportsmen it is obscene as is the postal bloke -- no one is worth that when the people that work on the floor get SBA

Thanks RnR, would be interesting to know how many of these are donating to politics.

This is so wrong, especially when Australia Post has been going downhill and prices going up since he's been in charge.  Good on you Pauline Hanson for bringing this, and many other things, to the attention of the Australian people and Government!!!

I read recently that a country in Europe has a law that nobody can be paid more than X times the total wage or salary package of the LOWEST paid employee in the same organization.  I forget what X was - maybe 5 or 6 I think. Anyway, it's not surprising that the country in question has the world's happiest population and healthiest economy.

Yes, great idea, was that Finland? or Denmark? Finland had the best schooling system too, very happy kids eager to learn and are encouraged to be creative and active rather than submissive.
