Australian Immigration Call Centers to be Outsourced

More than 250 public servants at the Department of Immigration and Border Protection face the sack as the department moves to outsource its key call centres to a private operator.

The move presents a "serious security" risk, with no guarantee that the call centres would continue to be staffed by Australian workers, according to the main public service union.

The majority of the job losses will be at Immigration's Sydney Service Centre where more than 220 departmental employees take calls about visas, citizenship and respond to other compliance queries

Since the unionised Public Service salaries and perks have now surpassed those of the private sector one can only think this is a good move for the hard working taxpayers who have not got any redress these days and whose taxes are taken at source unlike those not on PAYE.

Crept in and we see now and then only top CEO's etc like Aus Post who resigned after we got to know his 4.8 million base salary and 5.5 after bonuses for sacking many ordinary long term employees.

Where was the union then?

And surely a good move for home prices as this means many will move with their jobs leaving homes to be sold and demand and supply is what is pushing up prices in cities - so another good reason to move out of crowded cities, these jobs of the biggest employers in our land, Federal and State Public Service.

All in all good for the majority so pat on the back for this.

Come on if Labor did it the Unions would be chortling!

And good for rural areas getting anothe job for their areas means more services.   GP's etc who are always in short supply.

I believe many public sector services should be outsourced

All of centerlink, is one

national Parks , Water, Libraries, Prisons, all Transportation

So many opportunities to reduce burden on taxpauer and introduce more robuist, efficient and accountable services

This is what the bludgers do

The Queensland government is facing a "significant financial risk" due to an increase in the number of highly paid public servants in recent years.

And without making changes, it will be difficult to maintain a financially sustainable public service if the long-term trend continues, a report warns.

The report found the public service overly top-heavy with too many senior bureaucrats compared to front-line staff.

A Queensland Audit Office report found there was an increase of up to 70 per cent in employees earning at a AO8 level, at least $100,000 a year, across different departments over the past five years.

Employees at level AO7 decreased over the same period.

"This means government is employing more staff at the higher annual earnings band to deliver on its objectives today than it did five years ago," the report says.

The audit office said it was explained to some extent by increases resulting from collective bargaining, but also by an increase in average job classifications
