Australia's Manus Island refugee detention centre to close

papers calling for the closure of manus island refugee detention centre

Australia will close its controversial Manus Island detention center, the Papua New Guinea government said on Wednesday.

"Both Papua New Guinea and Australia are in agreement that the center is to be closed," Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said on Facebook.

The detention center has been housing asylum seekers since 2012.

GREAT DECISION MALCOLM - BUT HOPEFULLY NONE OF THESE TURN OUT TO BE TERRORISTS ONE DAY

Why does the thread say great decision Malcolm ? He had no say in the PNG courts decision or any input into it getting to court. Equally Dutton claimed it was a PNG matter and now says it is a govt dividend from stopping the boats. What a useless dill Dutton continues to be. I am amazed at how inept he has been in every position he has held as a politician and why he still has a portfolio at all. He must know where the bodies are buried or is the pin up boy of the hard right faction in the libs.

" The minister crafts the facts to his case. When in April the PNG Supreme Court said holding asylum seekers was illegal and the PNG government foreshadowed the Manus Island centre would go, the Australian government was anxious both to kick the matter beyond the election and to get some solution short of closure. Dutton tried to portray it as PNG’s issue.

Now he has another line. “The closure of Manus will be the next dividend in the success of stopping the boats,” he said this week after his talks with PNG Prime Minister Peter O'Neil. Well no, Peter: the closure of Manus – for which, despite the hype, there is no public timetable – will be the “dividend” of the PNG court decision.

Dutton remains adamant that no refugees from Manus will be allowed to come to Australia. They must either go to their home countries – despite being found to be in genuine fear of persecution – or settle in PNG, where they are clearly not welcome.

It should be noted that of 551 Manus men assessed by the PNG government as at the end of May, 98% had been found to be refugees. On Nauru, it was 77% of those assessed. Dutton has confirmed there is no third country in prospect for resettlement. He won’t countenance a country such as New Zealand, believing that would encourage the people smugglers. "

Angela Merkel would probably take them. She lets ANYONE enter Germany.

Here come the boats again.

Huh?

Manus Island used to be like heaven on earth - so clean and tidy.

It broke my heart to see pictures of the place since these immigrants moved in - garbage and rubbish everywhere - good to be rid of them from there.

I feel sorry for the native population and their children that have to live there.

And you blame the asylum seekers?

You're insane.

They didn't ask to be there.

Nor did we ask them to try and get into Australia.

We used to.

$2 Billion has gone to PNG to hold them there you would have thought some of that money would have gone to build a proper Rubbish tip, not the refugees fault but the PNG governments for that mess of rubbish.

Let me get this right, we lock people up who have done nothing to us in concentration camps, and then we complain about the mess?  Using the same arguement, are you saying that the Jews in Belsan and the Boars in South Africa deserve to be critisized for leaving a mess behind when they left the concentration camps they were in? At least they were eventually set free.

I apoligise to all who have been affected by the disgraceful inexcusable and despicable acts perpetrated in the name of national security in WWII and the Boer War, but I feel that what the government is doing in our name although of a lesser number is just as wrong.

The political party that I have supported for most of my life is responsible for this outrage and I have vowed never to give them my vote again until they redress this disgusting policy.

I hope that the people that support this savagery never see themselves or their family in the same position.

The same sort of mess is visible along their tracks through Europe ... “an orgy of waste and feces wherever you look.”

Which anti-Muslim hate site did you find those on?

Could you show us some pics of the bombed out homes they used to live in? They probably look pretty much the same.

barak Im sure any one of them would except an invation from you to come live with you

Stewie, that is a stupid comment.

You have no idea what I do in my life, who I provide help to, and how. And I'm not telling you.

I do know many people who were refugees. They are all great Australians.

Maybe you should broaden your experiences.

Now, back to discussing the topic, rather than me. OK?

Have you tried watching the news Barak ?

It helps if you are multilingual.

I watch a little TV news, but I'm very selective.

I find too much of it politically manipulative, deceptive, dishonest, and just plain shallow.

No idea what you're watching there, but did you notice the word "CLAIMS" on the screen? Did you take what you saw as the truth?

It is despicable for people to keep  posting such damning pictures without any proper proof. The earth beongs to all and refugees deserve to be helped by Australia and other wealthy countries. Shame on you Abby.

You are the one to talk Peter.

Who is Peter?

Why the smartarse post?

Peter? Are you speaking to me Abby or whoever you are.

Barak I take that answer as a Not on your bludy life would I  LOL

I am not the topic.

The rubbish on Manus is up to the contractors. Same as the deaths at Manus was because of the contractors and poor management.

Abby it is surprising that you would connect the rubbish on Manus to the detainees when they are not in charge of rubbish removal. Equally do you think refugees walking from place to place have rubbish receptacles along the way ? People on our streets with rubbish bins provided by councils still manage to toss litter on the streets or out of their cars.

Money most likely gobbled up by corrupt png politicians

Geoff

what I said above is "I feel sorry for the native population and their children that have to live there." ... make of it what you will but my memories of Manus island is a pristine paradise.

The large rubbish heap in the picture is located next to a school ... this was NOT the case before the Labor Party struck a deal with PNG Government... nobody cares about the native population there.

I agree with you a lot of our people are not fit to live in our society or any other society .. the same applies to the economic migrants traipsing through Europe....

When  they're "traipsing through Europe" do these refugees take their own toilets and dustbins???

Peter

Try economic migrants

Who are you speaking to? Seems you have renamed me "Peter". Peter is a good name but would like to know why I've got a new name. They are not "economic migrants" they are REFUGEES.

You can tell that from the photos of that rubbish ???

You need not hide I know your real name :)

Drat Banjo...the  chicken knows  your "real" name. Perhaps she would like to share it with us??

Banjo...the little chubby chook and her fiends (not a typo) think you are Mari's Dad...Peter..

Oh dear!!

Go on Abby, you  have my permission to publish my "real" name.

Btw about those pictures, just type in Google "Refugee Mess" and you'll find dozens of propaganda pictures.

I have seen similar mess after Australia Day fireworks right here in Australia and that's only in one night.

Refugee camps

Labor opens them.

liberal shuts them

That shows who actually cares.

yes - lib policies save lives

the economic migrants, future terrorists,  and ours

MOre importantly Lib policies are saving the Native population of Manus Island.

All of this is because Australia wanted to deny legal rights to asylum seekers by processing them off shore.  The part about saving them from drowning was an after thought because it sounded better to the International and local community.

We could have processed them on the mainland, it would have been more cost effective and if resourced properly would have been done much quicker.  We could have sorted the wheat from the chaff and sent the people who did not meet the criteria home.  We now have a situation where for purely politcal reasons the government has not got the guts to admit their mistake and rectify the situation.

They state ingenuous reasons such as providing a deterent and by doing so are wasting billions just to prove a point, what the point is I don't know, it has been lost in all the BS.

Process them on shore quickly and effectivley, send the ones who do not meet the criteria home, that is the deterant.  There is no need to inflict physical and mental damage to innocent people.

To the Libs there IS a need. It wins votes. (Not mine.)
