Australia's new $50 note

Australia will soon have a new $50 note, and will enter circulation in October 2018.

The notes will still feature portraits of Aboriginal author David Unaipon and the first female MP, Edith Cowan.

“David Unaipon and Edith Cowan were campaigners for social change and we are proud to continue featuring them on the $50 banknote,” says Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Philip Lowe. “The new banknote provides the opportunity to tell more of the rich story behind these distinguished Australians.”

“Improved security and ease of recognition underpin the design of the new $50 banknote.”

New security features include a similar top-to-bottom clear window seen on the new $5 and $10 notes, as well as a reversing number and flying bird, and a patch with a rolling colour effect and microprint. Oh, and they look good, too.

What do you think?

I read the stories about this too Leon.

Not new at all IMO as reported by certain media … just a ‘security upgrade’ come redesign, because since 4 October 1995 when the first polymer $50.00 banknote was released … the portrait of Indigenous Australian author and inventor David Unaipon has appeared on the front with Edith Cowan featured on the reverse.

Current polymer version.

Wonder if anyone will notice the difference.

Yes I certainly will notice the difference ... the new notes have a very unpleasant feel about them ... very hard to put in the wallet and so will definitely be uncomfortable under the mattress:)

I like it. I'm pleased that they have moved Edith Cowan's eyeballs to the left, it gives her a more pleasant, uplifting look.

Well spotted Frank,   they won't pull wool over your eyes.

Ha Ha Ha, Funny Suze. Personally I dont care what colour treasury come up with, it will always look good in my pocket.

It's tacky , just doesn't feel like money any more....

And they have great difficulty being swallowed by the pokie machines in the RSL.!

Hands off the $100 dollar bills , with their lovely colour, and texture ,

If I have them I feel very rich, ..

Don't like em, that's remarkable.

Send all your spare ones to me, I don't care what they look like. Thank you :-)

How does anyone know what they feel like if they won't be issued until October?

I am guessing they will be very like the $5 and the $10 we have already with a slipery plastic strip

I hate the new notes   that we already have they are slippery and are hard to handle as they slip and slide -- I liked the old Paper notes they were easy to handle

I have had problems with the $5 and $10 notes, they are easily confused, or is it just me, they remind me of the US notes being very similar to look at and being the same or very similar in colour, were we having major security problems with the old notes, or is this change for change sake?

Hi Jim, think there’s been lots of $50 note forgeries in recent years, for example:

• More than 33,000 fake $50 notes were removed from circulation in 2014-15, triple the number detected just two years before, government figures show.
• Watch out for fake $50 notes in Queensland, January 2017.
• Police believe a flood of counterfeit money in Tasmania may not be the work of a hopeful amateur, but of a far more organised network of criminals, July 2017.

See here.

....... who cares?  Money - is money - right???  Who does ithe new note affect?

No one!!!   :-)

I have heard that the new notes get spat out of machines -- parking etc and they are a pain for slipping out of your purse when getting money out

I've had friends sit down for a cuppa and  the notes slipped out of their pockets .. who says cofee at my place is free.

Yes Suze, have had notes jump out of my purse when getting money out myself they just slip and slide everywhere

Hope they print plenty of them to replace all the $50 notes stashed away in peoples "just for emergency" funds. Most households would have anywhere between a couple hundred and several thousands of dollars worth of fifties hidden away.

I squirrelled away so many $2 dollar notes that when they went out of circulation you could have stuffed a pillow slip with them...

Along came the mighty storm and as is said they were "Gone with the wind"..to be seen no more!...

I recieve and spend as I get it now...

What cranky you mean to say you lost the lot?   WHY?

Because our house and everything in it was destroyed planB... and the money in the tin went with it...never did find the Clarks swimming pool full of water ???..  :(

Wow Cranky. What happened in the storm? ... when, vaguely where and the results in detail. Hate bad storms.

I am SO sorry to hear that cranky -- you poor bugger --

Brisbane, November the 6th 1973 at 6.03 pm.

A Tornado. It was similar to an aircraft crashing into our house.

The little effects we saved in that we lost in the floods in January 1974..

A nightmare was an under statement.

The wind comes up now and I tremble.

So sorry to hear that Cranky, terrifying for you. Just found this video.

Can understand your fear.

1973 Brisbane, Australia Tornado.

Not a fan of storms myself, my grandfather was killed by a lightning strike.

BTW: Just turned the aircon on AGAIN on the sunny/hot Gold Coast. So sick of the heat.

RIP, your $2 notes.

I wish

I think that are good designs!!
