Beloved M*A*S*H star diagnosed with Parkinson's

M*A*S*H leading man Alan Alda has revealed he's been battling Parkinson's disease for 3 1/2 years.

The 82-year-old, six-time Emmy Award winner who played Benjamin Franklin 'Hawkeye' Pierce on the long-running series M*A*S*H said he was not angry when he received his diagnosis and it has not been a death sentence, rather, he's using it as a catalyst to live a full life.

“I’ve had a full life since then. I’ve acted, I’ve given talks, I help at the Alda Centre for Communicating Science at Stony Brook [University in New York]," Alda told CBS News.

“I started this new podcast. And I noticed that — I had been on television a lot in the last couple of weeks talking about the new podcast — and I could see my thumb twitch in some shots and I thought, it’s probably only a matter of time before somebody does a story about this from a sad point of view, but that’s not where I am.”

He may no longer be doing cartwheels, but don't count it out: he says that his diagnosis could help others with Parkinson’s disease realise that there are things they can still do, and he's actively encouraging them to “take action”.

“If you get a diagnosis,” he wrote on Twitter, “keep moving!”

“I take boxing lessons three days a week, play singles tennis twice a week, and take a mild pill — all Dr recommended. I even juggle a little. And I’m not entering dementia. I’m no more demented than I was before. Maybe I should rephrase that.

"Really. I'm good."

Alda also sent a reassuring message to his fellow Parkinson's sufferers.

“This is not to short-change people who are suffering with really severe symptoms. But in the very beginning, to be immobilised by fear and think the worst thing has happened to you, it hasn’t happened to you, you still have things you can do.”

I am not a MASH fan..but I do like his personality..I enjoyed some of his movies "Same time Next Year..The Aviator and Betsy's Wedding..

I wish him the very best and to those suffering with Parkinson's..there is a lot of positive research happening on that front..

I'm a M*A*S*H addict. One of the best series ever. Sorry about Alan Alda, there is life after Parkinson.

Such a great actor,  so very sad to see this happening.  Always loved MASH, excellent series.

Great actor.  I thought he had died.  Good to see Alan is still kicking.

I never watched the original MASH -- only some repeats but I did enjoy what I saw -- LOVE Alan Alda -- he is such a lovely human -- devoted to his Wife and Family and such a caring wonderful bloke and so darn interesting to listen to, he is also right into science and is a pure delight and not into hinself at all.
