Bert and Ernie creator confirms rumours

After decades of speculation that Bert and Ernie were gay, the creator of the pair, Mark Saltzman, has confirmed the beloved characters are more than just best friends

Mr Saltzman reveleaed this week that the two characters reflected his own same-sex relationship with film editor Arnold Glassman at the time.

“Yeah, I was Ernie,” he said.

“I look more Bert-ish. And Arnie as a film editor — if you thought of Bert with a job in the world, wouldn’t that be perfect? Bert with his paperclips and organisation?

“And I was the jokester. So, it was the Bert and Ernie relationship, and I was already with Arnie when I came to Sesame Street.

“So I don’t think I’d know how else to write them, but as a loving couple. I wrote sketches … Arnie’s OCD would create friction with how chaotic I was. And that’s the Bert and Ernie dynamic.”

Glad Ernie and Bert are out of the closet. Now what about Noddy and Bigears?

lol lol lol lol - "out of the closet" - now that's hilarious!!

Banana's in Pyjama's ??  The mind boggles..............   :-)

Imposters, can't trust anyone anymore  :(

That's very funny Reagan..this whole thing is getting so ridiculous!

I can't believe they bring sex and such as this into such things a Kids programs

PlanB,

Have you ever watched Sesame Street or The Muppets? Where is the sex you speak of? There are straight relationships eg. Kermit and Miss Piggy and now we learn that Bert and Ernie are based on a real life gay relationship. No sexual content is depicted however so why do you have a problem with Bert and Ernie’s relationship?

No Robi I have never ever watched these shows -- but it just seems that why can't they just go ahead and have KIDS shows -- why do they have to bring in gay/straight or whatever -- most little kids would not know about such things -- I would think?

OK, I know that sometimes I find it hard to keep up with things, especially in the world of so called present day entertainment so please excuse me in advance, as I'm not aware that Bert Newton and Ernie Sigley had any kind of relationship?

ha ha sageman,  live and learn,     live and learn,

Tisk tisk tut tut oh my and deary me. "Live and let live"  What ever happened to it?

Leave Ernie and Bert alone, when I watched them with my sister who was 10 years younger and then years later with my son, never once did anyone speak of their 'relationship', we just asumed they were friends that lived in the same house, afterall they never shared kisses, hugs or a bed.

Why are not leaving kids shows to their own imagination whatever it is? Kids certainly do not need to know puppets sexual choices.

A writer rewriting history.  Move on,.
