.... my friend told me "Yes" ...... she recently had to apply for the pension and a Rates Notice was adequate here in Melbourne.
Same here - only had the rates notice to show them and it was adequate for the pension application. Live in country NSW.
An annual rate notice is a legal document and should never be tossed out for at least 7 years. It might be easier to scan a copy, or take a photo, and file it on a usb or hard-drive for easy access later (if need be).
Centrelink are wrong and are being unreasonable bullies. What if there is a mortgage on the property and the lender won't allow the deeds to be taken away? The rate notice should fully describe the property and the name of the owner(s) is there for all to see.
Land titles are stored electronically now (well for Victoria at least) so even with a mortgage, you can obtain a copy of your title online.
