City of Las Vegas now 100% powered by renewable energy

Las Vegas is now the largest US city to be entirely powered by green energy.

“We can brag that the city, this city of Las Vegas, is one of the few cities in the entire world that can boast using all of its power from a green source,” said Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman.

The city was bale to make the announcement official after Boulder Solar 1, NV Energy’s massive solar array in the southeast corner of Nevada, went live in mid-December.

One hundred per cent of Las Vegas' power is now supplied by Boulder Solar 1 works in conjunction with geothermal energy plants and various solar panels placed throughout the city.

Since shifting to renewable energy in 2008, the city has saved roughly $5 million annually. Now that it's running solely on renewable sources it will save even more.

Do you think we'll ever be so forward-thinking?

That's excellent news.

Australia will get there eventually, but it won't be through forward thinking at a federal level. We will, sadly, be following much of the rest of the world.

The conservatives running the country prefer to look backwards, not forwards. It's possible individual states could make the right moves.

Very interesting story.  Pity it does not tell the whole story.  Firstly, a number of the biggest casinos, like MGM, Sands & Wynn are looking at court action, to go alone because the State public utility commission gave only power company, NV Energy, permission to charge much higher rates and fees to users, shattering industry’s business model.  Without these incomes, NV Energy will probably go belly up.

In December, Nevada’s three-member PUC effectively destroyed a thriving rooftop solar industry by approving NV Energy’s request to drastically lower the rate at which solar users are compensated for excess energy they provide to the grid.

Not sure about the first paragraph there. Maybe it's like the subsidies given to coal in Australia.

But the second paragraph sounds just like Australia.

How can a solar system that cost over $100M to install, save $5m in power costs?

innes, if you read the whole story you will see that it is mostly municiple buildings that are using this power.  If this is the case why would the Casinos need to go to court to opt out?

If the city is paying less for power it is saving on power costs, but it does not say if it is factoring in the innitial cost of the infrastructure.  But to tally the true savings, the reduction of carbon and other pollutants has to be taken into account.

The average commercial electricity rate in Las Vegas is 16.5% less  than the national average.

Residential electricity 2016,  Nevada 12.06/Kwh,  US Average 12.45/Kwh.  $US100Million investment to save .39cents/Kwh.  The banks pay a higher investment rate.

The article and headline have been updated to note the city’s renewable energy powers government facilities, not all personal or commercial entities.
