Climate change to see spike in beer prices

Researchers are warning that unchecked climate change could cause global beer prices to soar.

Scientists predict increasing droughts and heatwaves could lead to a 17 per cent drop in barley – a key ingredient in beer – according to a report published in Nature Plants.

That drop in barley production means beer prices on average would double, even adjusting for inflation, the study warned.

“Although it may be argued that consuming less beer is not disastrous – and may even have health benefits – there is little doubt that for millions of people around the world, the climate impacts on beer consumption will add insult to injury,” the paper stated.

The YourLifeChoices’ Friday Flash Poll already showed us that YLC members care about climate change, but this news may start to worry some of those less interested in the disastrous impacts.

Would you still drink beer if it doubled in price?

LOL  ... That might make the climate change deniers sit up and take notice.   Forward it to Tony Abbott, cc Andrew Bolt & Alan Jones.  Oh, and our PM doesn't mind a beer either, add him to the list.  :)

Beer prices?  There'll be a lot more cost increases if climate change bites.

WE had a climate change, yesterday it was raining , today its sunny. Wow, what next!

The sun is going into a 11 year low level sunspot cycle which is actually supposed to be cooler for us, so I'll see.

That's not climate - that's weather! You shouldn't confuse the two.

The premise of this article is wrong. It assumes that climate change will do all of the things promoted by the IPCC and that the science is settled. I have attached a link that gives the names of those reputable scientists who disagree with the IPCC.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_scientists_who_disagree_with_the_scientific_consensus_on_global_warming

I am not convinced that the prophesies are correct; we only need to read what Flannery said in 2007 that our dams would never be filled again. When they filled to overflowing, Flannery said that this was an example of the affects of global warming. In 2015, Flannery predicted that we would experience more cyclones which would also be more ferocious than ever seen, since then we have had less cyclonic events and those we have had have been less severe. It has been predicted that the ice caps would melt, polar bears would become extinct and Pacific islands would disappear. None of this has happened.

There is climate change occurring, just as climate change has been happening since records have been kept, but I don't believe that man can alter Nature. The Paris agreement is a con where rich nations are funnelling billions into an authority which then disburses the funds with no oversight to those nations deemed to be at risk. We are told that China is dismantling coal fired power stations yet we are not told that they are building more coal fired power stations to replace them. We are being lied to.

As I have posted here before, I expect a torrent of abuse from those of the left, no rebuttal of my statements with facts, just personal abuse. I will be labelled as a "denier" which I find most offensive because that word, "denier" has been set aside as a label for those sceptics who don't believe that 6 million Jews died during WWII.

Don't make this a left/right issue. It's not.

You think Rod63? Check which groups are promoting global warming/climate change, getting rid of coal, killing off livestock and stopping dams being built.

In the latest Fairfax ipsos poll 62% of Liberal voters and 51% of One Nation voters were concerned about global warming. The poll held here at YLC was also dominated by people who believe in global warming and want action. Are you saying all of those people (or most of them) are left wing Old Man?

Well, Robi, a poll is only as good as the questions asked and the people interviewed and we don't know what either of those were with the Faifax poll. As regards the YLC poll, the following was my response to that yesterday;

"Well, cut my legs off and call me Shorty. 1,859 people fill in a survey on a left leaning website, the results are cherry picked to suit the editors and we have the headline, "OLDER AUSTRALIANS SAY THEY WILL VOTE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE! Give me a break.

Good point Old Man. As for the beer price - it is taxes plain and simple that put the beer price up. Was in Europe last month and in virtually any corner shop you can buy a large (500ml) can of beer for about $A1.20. Cheapest six pack of local beer here is $14. Full carton at a Dan Murphy type shop is $A21. I suppose they have a different climat change over there. Keep dreaming guys.

I would probably drink half as much, so spend the same. :-)

Let's hope it doesn't come to that by some serious world-wide action being taken very soon.

There is no chance that we’ll be part of that world-wide action with Morrison at the helm.

So weather is not climate??? Now thats a strange statement! Should we be calling it "weather change" or "weather warming".

Funny how no one yesterday or so far today is commenting on that other recommendation in the IPCC report that exhorts people to forgo meat!

Cattle and other livestock are just about the biggest emitters of methane (a greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide) which is about 23 times as bad as CO2 for the environment. World wide livestock is a far bigger pollutor than transportation.

Bash the coal producers, but eat your meat? Where are the climate change proponents on this?

I agree KSS, agriculture is one big greenhouse problem, better to cut back or give up meat and dairy and it has been recommended by the experts too.

If everyone gave up meat for one day even would make a dramatic difference.

I like 3 helpings of baked beans a week so I am contributing to CO2 as well. OK ban the baked bean cans forthwith. Or at least put a serious warning on the label.

Alcohol has no nutritional value anyway, it just fries the brain.

made from vegetables, fruit and grain

But nothing better than a glass of Shiraz with a tender rib eye or t bone . Yummmmmm

The day will come when humans will be desperate for water, not beer.

Don't think so

Arent you greenies always on about global warming and the ice caps melting . You guys will be drowing in it

I like a nice cold beer occasionally, so yes I would pay the price, but my preference is always a good drop of vino.
