Coca Cola closing in on cannabis
Once infamously infused with cocaine, Coca Cola may one day return to adding an extract of a hallucinogenic drug to its soft drinks.
The beverage giant issued a statement recently saying it was “closely watching” the growing use of a cannabis element in drinks, after reports emerged that it was in talks with a Canadian marijuana-based company.
The company, Aurora Cannabis, saw its shares soar 17 per cent on the Toronto Stock Exchange following the reports.
However, the derivative of the plant that is the focus of so much interest, cannabidiol, does not contain psychoactive components.
Also known as CBD, cannabidiol is legal in many countries because of its documented therapeutic uses.
It is believed by many to have anti-inflammation and pain-relieving properties, and numerous CBD-infused products have emerged recently.
Coca Cola spokesman Kent Landers said in the statement that the soft-drink maker had not made a decision on adding the ingredient to its beverages.
“Along with many others in the beverage industry, we are closely watching the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient in functional wellness beverages around the world. The space is evolving quickly,” Mr Landers said.
Are you aware of any health benefits associated with cannabidiol? Would you drink a beverage that contained the extract if you believed it would ease pain and inflammation?
I have heard of the health benifits -- but there is NO way I would take to drinking Coke --
How come Coke can use it but those that are wanting Medical cannabis -- for medical reasons, are unable to get it at all?
