Coconut oil...newest magic elixir?

Came across the following piece, and wonder if anyone else has heard of the wondrous properties of Coconut oil.

----------------------------------------------------------

From beating sugar cravings to aiding weight loss, there are more benefits of coconut oil than most of us may realise.

1

All fats are not created equal

Coconut oil contains short term medium-chain saturated fatty acids (MCFAs), which is a "healthy" form saturated fat compared to trans fat. Trans fatty acid consumption has been linked with heart problems, depression and increased cholesterol levels. What does consuming a fat with MCFAs mean for your body? Our system can metabolise coconut oil quickly in the liver and immediately covert this into energy (fuel for the brain and muscle function) rather than it being stored as fat.

2

Controls weight

One 2009 study looked at the weight loss link between women's consumption of coconut oil and found that it reduces abdominal obesity. Researchers discovered coconut oil is easy to digest and also protects the body from insulin resistance. To try coconut oil for weight loss start by adding one teaspoon to your diet and gradually work your way up to four teaspoons per day.

Can't do any harm to try, I guess.

I make the most amazing pies of all sorts and sausage rolls and apricot pies which are just wonderful and apple turnovers just with 3/4 cup extra Virgin cold pressed coconut oil and two cups flour and a bit of salt  SO easy and delicious.

..

Are we preventing Alzheimers? hope so. I do not have weight to lose but do not want to put any on either :) but sure hope it helps good cholesterol and reduces the bad stuff along with a mirade of other good things.

The proof will be in the eating and then tests. We will see.

..

We sent away for 4 litres  but it was in the Big Container with narrow opening so next time will buy it over the net again,  but at another place with 1 litre wide mouth jars >>  much easier as it solidifys.

Love it for the face  and body along with Moo Goo and Jojoba oil (also much cheaper over the net).

Life really is fantastic.Have a special Friday folks

Get stuck into that DHA from fish oil, and colourful veggies Phyl, keep the exercise up and keep interested in life.  Participate.  Apart from that, hope optimistically that the DNA is coded right.

Faith helps too...

Here is a copy of an email sent to me by a friend regarding coconut oil.

"I bought mine on line, can't remember where but I think it was the same place I bought some protein powder.

Its called Aclara Health organic Pure cold pressed organic oil. Tastes beautiful in cooking. It's a bit hard when it's cold, but in summer its runny. You don't have to put it in the fridge either.
I use it on my face only as I bought some coconut scrub in Fiji for my body. Friends of mine rub it all over their body and wear dodgy pj's for the night. They also use it in their hair. I have lost weight not because of coconut oil, but because I am training to compete at a Physique show ha ha ha 18kg since last year :)" So as said by Phyl and others it tastes delicious and should replace some of the other fats and not on as well as.

The many benefits of coconut oil are finally reaching the mainstream.

Benefits like:

Promoting your heart healthPromoting weight loss when and if you need itSupporting your immune system healthSupporting a healthy metabolismProviding you with an immediate energy source Helping to keep your skin healthy and youthful lookingSupporting the proper functioning of your thyroid gland

Worth Googling. I am really excited using the Coconut Oil and agree it needs to be used instead of other oils not as well as.

Mayo Clinic

"A coconut oil diet or coconut diet typically suggests eating as much as 3 tablespoons of pure coconut oil a day or substituting it for other oils and fats normally used in cooking or baking. Some coconut oil diets also suggest that you eat a diet that's low in carbohydrates, while other coconut oil diets require you to work your way through several stages, including carbohydrate restriction and colon cleansing.

Although eating coconut oil in moderation for a short-term diet probably won't harm your health, it may not help you lose weight. And keep in mind that coconut oil actually has more saturated fat than do butter and lard. For successful, long-term weight loss, stick to the basics — an overall healthy-eating plan and exercise."

Save your money.

You all make me laugh!!!!! the only way to lose weight  is to excercise and eat healthy.

Glad we made you laugh Chrissy - that too is good for you

I changed to coconut oil spray for cooking and am drinking lemon water, regular unchanged diet and gardening routine. Wanted to loose 5 Kg and now after a month I am half way there.

Hmmmm ... so, on this basis, we would expect that all South Sea/Pacific Islanders - whose islands are all laden with coconuts, and who dine on them regularly (because coconuts are part of their staple diet) - would all be built like rakehandles, and all be in superb, lithe shape .....

Yep, I can see it now .... Maoris (average weight about 130kgs) ... Samoans (average weight about 150kgs) ... Tongans (average weight about 170kgs) .......

Yep, sure looks like all good indicators to me ........... [;-)

I can tell you this much. The best weight loss system around, is keeping a set rat trap in the cupboard where you keep the cakes, chocolates, and pies ....... [;-)

The coconot oil spray makes the food taste yummy and it works for me and no Aaron I do not have shares in Coconut oil  :-)

I am only about a third weight of the Maoris, Samoans and Tongans ? Lost two and a half KG in one month by changing to coconut oil spray still sounds good to me. I still enjoy my cakes, chocs and bickies in moderation. Whoohoo!! Only one month to go to a healthier me - loooking like a 20 year old :-)

Good on ya, Abby! The problem with getting older and not working so hard, is the ever-increasing waistline. I'm still in pretty good shape at 63, but I've never had a weight problem any time in my life, luckily.

However, the temptations of yummy fresh bread, cakes, pies and icecream are always there, though!

We've just come back from a months drive from Perth to Darwin in a hired motorhome, and we were really surprised to see the poor shape that so many grey nomads were in.

Too many older blokes carrying a huge gut, and too many Nan's dreadfully out of shape. It's little wonder the Docs are slamming obesity as a national epidemic.

SWMBO has a terrible time keeping the weight off, but she's bit bigger than me, and has a big frame. She found that keeping a written record of exactly what she eats, with the "points-scoring system" (lots of points for fatty or high carb foods, and low points for salads and raw vegies) worked admirably - when she keeps it up. She lets the system slip, and the weight comes back on.

We walk every day, I try to get her to ride her bike with me as much as possible, and she does a large part of the gardening - however, keeping unnecessary weight, off seems to be a constant battle once you get over 60.

We used canned coconut milk for making stir-fries for a while, and found it yummy - then we found it was pretty high in saturated fats, so we gave that a miss. We find that fresh yummy bread is the biggest reason for an expanding waistline, so we make sure our bread consumption is cut back to a loaf a week between the two of us.

Cakes, biscuits, choccies, and icecream are a permanent threat - we rarely buy icecream now, and we only buy small, 4 packs of choc wedges or cornettos occasionally - and never, ever, 2 litre containers of icecream - that are a huge temptation to keep scooping away at!

"Only one month to go to a healthier me - loooking like a 20 year old :-)"

You have to tell your secret.

I was approaching (emphasis on approaching) trim completing an online food recording chart.  Then some disruptions to the routine and I slipped..Damn!
