Coles 10% seniors discount

As outlined in our enewsletter yesterday and all major news services, Coles offered a 10% seniors discount for Seniors card holders on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week (21-22 July 2009). (offer does not apply to tobacco, cigarettes, gift cards, iTunes and mobile phone recharges)

Christine wrote in saying: The Coles discount is fine, if it were all the time the same as all the other outlets that accept the Seniors Card, but they chose, Tuesday and Wednesday of the age pension week, a lot of pensioners don't receive their pensions until Friday, when they do their shopping. No Help to Them, is it?

The big retailers are about the only ones, that do not help the pensioners, by accepting the Seniors Card at their stores everyday of the week, or any day normally.
It was just a gesture! and not all of us are taken in.

What do you think?

Well I went to Coles and did half my shopping there and the other 1/2 at Woolies--I did save about $5-50 at coles

Agree with you about the timing of the discount. Except for About Seniors I had heard nothing about the discount. I had to go to Coles this morning and did save $ 1.87 which is

better in my pocket than theirs.

I agree the discount should be on a permanent basis, even if it was on set days each week. At least pensioners could work around the set day.

It only needs one of the big two to make it a permanent thing and the other one will follow.

I asked the girl at the check out if this was going to be ongong--she said that it will be up to the Government ??

Maybe it is because Coles have changed to Westfarmers?

We saved $20 shopping at Coles today.

Sandikay that is downright mean to make the seniors special day a day before payday.

If some people live from pension to pension then they cannot take advantage of the savings and that is not nice if Coles deliberately did that. Come on Coles make the savings maybe one day a month or one day a week and on or after payment day.

Are folks watching where Hughie is lately? What a fantastic trip he and Betty are having.

I never thought of that Phyl (Coles doing that b4 pension day)--typical

If Coles or Woolies were serious about helping pensioners, they would be offering some sort of benefit or discount on an ongoing basis. By doing a "one off" discount, especially just before the pension pay day shows me that this exercise is just another cynical attempt to gain a bit more market share. I know that circumstances and convenience makes most of us shop at these villains, but I look forward to some SERIOUS competition gaining a foothold.

I try to shop at Aldi, IGA etc whenever I can and really hope that COSTCO can get stores up and running in heavily populated areas.

We only have the dreaful 2 here :( and I beleive Costco make you pay $60 per year to shop there

Quite right, PlanB.....I understand that there is an annual subscription of $60 with costco. I would imagine that groups of friends or some local community groups could take out a single "membership" and buy for a crowd. It would save lots of money and provide some social interaction.

Yes maybe that would be ok as I think that they sell in bulk--wold be no good for me at all, bad enough that I have to buy say 6 bread rolls in woolies--etc

when i was a little boy my mummy told me

"don't look a gift horse in the mouth"

what on earth is wrong with people - can they never see a good gesture anywhere ?

is it necessary to find fault with everything??

what in the name of heaven have you done for Coles for example - do you offer 10% more on some days ??

seems to me that we may consider that if it is of little worth to us it may be of worth to someone else - just for a change.

have a nice day

regards peter

Could not agree with you more, Peter. It seems to me that the older you get the more ungrateful you become. Coles and Woolies gave the 10% off because pensioners were unable to take advantage of their big petrol coupon offer, the previous week.

Also the day you receive the pension is random.! There would have been pensioners who received their pension on Monday who would have been very happy. However not happy enough to get on here and say so.

good on ya Bart

have a great day

regards peter
