Confusion, anger over University of Queensland going smoke-free in 2018

University officers would not confiscate cigarettes and take disciplinary action if they saw students smoking on campus, but rather question whether they realise the risks, ask them to move off campus and discuss whether they have any intention of quitting. However, Mr Carmichael said firmer discussions and potential disciplinary action would be used against repeat offenders, but he hoped it would not come to that.

Bloody fascists!

Unbelievable.

....the whole thing is a joke!!!   Smoking is legal - legal!  Yet - people are treated lke lepers and the Govt is raking in millions - millions -  from the taxes of cigarettes!

Heroin etc. is illegal - yet - the stupid Govt.  "pony up" pay mega money for "Safe Injecting Rooms"??  For what?   A drug that is illegal??????   Go figure - the world has gone mad...............................truly a joke!!!

I give up Raph - I truly do!!!   :(

How about private "Smoking Rooms"???    - lol lol - least "smokers" pay the Govt.  millions  - Heroin users don't!!!

Yeah - lol - private Smoking Rooms - velvet couches - coffee machines - flat screen tv's - Chef on demand - amazing bar/French Champs.   ....... etc. etc. lol lol ...........smokers have paid billion s to the Govt. - BILLIONS!!!!!

Yep, time to either make it illegal and give up that lovley tax revenue, or leave people alone to enjoy their vices, can't have it both ways.

I enjoy a particular brand of cigar from time to time, but I make sure that my enjoyment does not detract from the enjoyment of those around me, it is unfortunate that more people can't think of doing the same.  Having said that, I am fortunate to live on enough property that allows me to do what I like without anyone seeing what I do or being effected by second hand smoke.  I don't know how I would get on in a crowded city environment.

As for private smoking rooms, why should I have to share my hand rolled cigar smoke with the common rable? LOL.

Just because you can do something does not mean that you should do it.

I agree with you Foxy -- they told everyone that smoking was great -- even Drs used to smoke when you were in the surgery with them and often offered you a Cig'  the Tobacco Companies and the Government are as bad as the likes of James Hardie --making a mint out of killing people -- and the Government have many shares in tobacco still.

I also agree about the shooting up rooms with the illegal drugs and the smokers are treated like lepers.

I'm amazed they're allowed to smoke there anyway.

As far as I'm aware smoking was banned on all educational campuses (schools, pre-schools, higher ed), at least in NSW many years ago. I know I had to 'go out' to have a smoke when teaching way back in 1982!!

As for Queensland, the laws are pretty strict any way. There's a copious list of 'smoke-free' zones, including:

• Smoking in national parks is banned within 10 metres of in-use campsites and any public facilities
• No smoking within 5 metres of public transport waiting points such as bus stops, taxi ranks, and ferry terminals
• No smoking at outdoor public places such as patrolled beaches, children’s playground equipment and major sports stadiums
• No smoking in cars where children under the age of 16 years are present
• No smoking at state and non-state schools, and for 5 metres beyond their boundaries
• No smoking at public and private hospitals and health facilities, and for 5 metres beyond their boundaries
• Eating or drinking venues:
- no smoking anywhere inside pubs, clubs, restaurants and workplaces
- no smoking at commercial outdoor eating or drinking areas

See https://www.qld.gov.au/health/staying-healthy/atods/smoking/laws.

AS FOXY rightly pointed out,    smoking is LEGAL,    and yes,   the gov, make millions out of smokers,   if people gave up smoking the govt would hit EVERYONE with enormous GST on everything,    because they would have to make up the short fall,      leave us in peace,   lord knows we pay enugh for them,

Cough cough , yes I ageee Cats

gst and taxes

ciggies cost $3 a pack here

cats, I would imagine that you would be the type of person like myself who would not just light up right next to a group of people without considering their right to enjoy fresh air.  Unfortunatley in this age of self entitled brats we do have people who would smoke in a crowded area just because they felt entitled to.

By giving people the right to act without consideration for those around them, we have created a society where instead of relying on common sense and good manners to provide a relativley pleasant place to live, we have to regulate and enforce rules that thirty years ago were just considered good manners.  By giving the individual unfettered, unconditional rights, we have condemmed the community as a whole to a lesser standard of wellbeing.

When in a situation where I am confounded as to what to do in a social situation, I just ask myself "What would Audrey do", it always works.

I quit about 20 years ago and saved lot of money plus I am a lot fitter.

People who say that can't give up are weak minded without any will power over their own brain.

Don't like paying taxes so don't smoke.

I don't mind people smoking as long as I can't smell it and they should pay their own medical bills when they get smoking related problems.

Many are addicted

some have drug addiction after being in prescription medication

some a obese because they can't stop Stuffing their faces

The revenue received from cigarettes is used up by having to treat people with chronic respiratory diseases and smoking related cancers. So not a lot of profit there.

All smoking should be banned everywhere unless one has at least a 2km radius around them. Smoking kills, it stinks up the place and people who smoke really need to use Colgate Total to fight gingivitis and bad breath.

Uh hih

anofher conclusion drawn using your extensive business skill no doubt

killed many flies today ?

I'm heading your way.

lol lol lol "extensive business skill"?? - now that' funny!!!! lol lol lol  ROFLMAO

Cigarette smoke does not only makes the atmosphere reek. It gets into hair and fur and stays there for months.

Nicotine addiction is as bad as heroine but can be beaten with help from your doctor and will power.

I was addicted having smoked since age 15 and I never attempted to give up until I made up my mind to do it.Do you want to see your grand children grow up and would you like to go to their weddings was my thoughts.

I have lost two friends to lung cancer and two more to throat cancer in the last ten years.

Should we ‘rethink’ academic freedom and free speech? This year’s annual Constitution Day lecture at Princeton University was titled “F%*# Free Speech: An Anthropologist’s Take on Campus Speech Debates” and maintained that “the academy has never promoted free speech as a central value.”

According to an article in Campus Reform, the lecture was given by the chairwoman of the Department of Anthropology and director of the Program in African Studies, Carolyn Rouse. In the lecture, Rouse stated that we should “rethink academic freedom and academic values” and that “the way in which free speech is being celebrated in the media makes little to no sense anthropologically.” “Put simply, speech is costly,” Rouse said. “

So, contrary to the ACLU’s statement on their website regarding the role of free speech on college campuses, the academy has never promoted free speech as its central value.”

Rouse might want to rethink this. After all, in the wake of the election, Rouse has been seeking submissions for her “Trumplandia” project — “a virtual space for documenting the impact of Trump’s presidency on the world” — something she says was inspired by her belief that “the changes promised by the president-elect to ‘make America great again’ were authoritarian and racist .

” The irony is as rich (and sickening) as a mayonnaise-covered chocolate truffle: This professor actually has the nerve to knock those who value free speech on campus, while using her position as a campus leader to spearhead a project that openly calls the president “racist” — an obvious example of the kind of speech that some might want to censor.

The Govt. screwed themselves by being super greedy and making the price of cigs. outta the ordinary persons reach!  Serves them right!  Smoking is LEGAL!!!  LEGAL!

No one in their right mind would pay retail   $25 - $30  plus -  (for pack of 20) - - when the "chop chop" boys have their "stands/holes in the wall selling in Shopping Centres"  - 100 cigs.  for $35!!!!

Ordinary "smokers" are buying black market cigs! lol
