Cyclone Debbie dealing out 232kph winds

cyclone debbie

The destructive force of Cyclone Debbie is hitting hard along the north Queensland coastline, with the 50mk eye of the category four storm currently passing over Hayman Island

Hurricane-force winds are thrashing the Whitsunday Islands and around 25,000 people have been evacuated ahead of the storm surge.

Hayman Island is dealing with gusts of up to 232 kilometres per hour

Cyclone Debbie is estimated to hover over over land for about 18 hours, with all the damage that vicious winds will bring.

"We're getting reports of roofs starting to lift, even in some of our own facilities in the Whitsundays," he said.

"This is a very big system. The core, if it does cross the coast at 2:00pm, then there's a protracted period of destructive winds and then high winds.

"We'll be moving into the evening, then, to get a full appreciation of what's actually happened."

Our thoughts go out to all who are battening down the hatches and dealing with Cyclone Debbie. Stay safe out there!

The sad facts are the media over the past years have gone to extremes to make every cyclone a potential devistating affair, and they have mostly petered out before the action...Now ,there are many people who are extremely complacent about this system, and staying put instead of seeking safety cyclone shelters'

We all hope that all the people and animals who are effected by this catagory 4 cyclone stay safe, memories of cyclone Tracey come to mind, lets hope the engineering changes they have made are successful as the winds approach...

In my personal experience, It's the storms that come out of the blue and catch you unaware that cause most of the destruction ..not the ones we are prepared for..

I read/heard somewhere Cranky, that unlike events in the past, the complacency has been replaced with a wariness and a sense of preparedness for many up here in Qld.

I know as a Queenslander the Lockyer Valley floods footage did it for me ... Be Aware, Be Prepared, so to speak.

All my best wishes to those impacted by the latest Queensland 'weather event'.

Have so many fond memories of Dingo Beach, hope it survives, unlike Dunk Island (another favourite) trashed in a previous cyclone.

Sad Sandi.

North Queensland Wildlife Care volunteer Bree Williams said everyone had done their best to care for Debbie. She said it was likely Debbie had internal injuries after being battered by the cyclonic winds.

“At the end of the day they (Alix and Ando) helped as much as they could,” Ms Williams said. “She was rescued and cared for and that’s all anybody can do at this stage. It is better than leaving her out in the open where anything can happen.”

Ms Williams said wildlife carers in the Whitsundays were still unable to pick up injured wildlife around the area because of flooding.

Some good news re a mob of cows that live on a paddock in the centre of the Gold Caost.

The well known Cows that graze off the Gooding Drive roundabout have been saved from flash flooding, moved to higher ground across the road to Carrara Markets vacant land. Good work to the police & the patient motorists while they crossed the busy road. Glad we could help our neighbours.
