Dial-up users.

Could anyone who is on dial-up please let me know which anti-virus programs are best used.
My sister is on dial-up, and has Avira, but it takes too long to load up and run, and eventually the connection drops out.
If you have suggestions for both ant-spy and anti-virus suitable for dial-up, it would be appreciated.

Son Tim is an IT Manager and he has promised to send a link to a free system that will work OK ...........might take him until tomorrow koko...............

I use Avast anti virus and Zonealarm firewall both free. Seem to work OK for me.

Thanks Clay. I'll look out for your update.

Bev, are you on dial-up?

If so, how long does it take for Avast to run???

I can't really remember exactly how long Avast took to download, but it was well within my four hour limit. It updates daily and that only takes a minute or so and you can still do other things while that happens. The Zonealarm took almost the full four hours. I have a download manager installed too, and if where you are downloading from has resume support, you can do it in increments. I'm still on dial up, so far, hoping to change that soon.

Tim e mailed me this morning koko as follows

" I'm not sure if this will suit, but they could try Panda Cloud, its 21Mb to download.

Thanks Wendy. I have AVG on the list for anti-spy.

Do you have an anti-virus as well?

The user's problem is that the dial-up times out during the scan, as it takes so long.

The mention of Grisoft's AVG always reminds me of a time when it failed 19 out of 21 tests. I believe it is supposed to have improved since then... it would certainly want to. Any AV program with so many failures should never have been on the market.

Conversely an AV program that has passed more reputable tests successfully than any other is Eset's NOD32. When using MS Windows it is also one of the fastest AV programs around but remains thorough in it's detection capabilities.

The other option is to simply dump MS Windows and instead run one of the Linux distributions.

The only real reason to even run an AV program when using the Linux OS is if you want to protect MS Windows users from themselves when forwarding from those who don't run decent AV protection themselves.
