Does your car have a 'killer' airbag?
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) warns that 1.6 million cars across the country are “ticking time bombs”.
They contain faulty Takata and Akpha airbags that have been recalled.
The ACCC says NSW and Victoria have the highest number of vehicles with airbags that need replacing, with 448,000 400,000 respectively.
In those states nearly 10,000 vehicles have the Alpha airbag and shouldn’t be on the road, says ACCC chairwoman Delia Rickard.
“If you have one of these cars, don't drive it … there's a one in two chance that if there is a collision, those bags could explode [and] spray metal shrapnel all over the car," she told the ABC.
Toyota has 582,000 cars affected, followed by Honda at 436,000 and Holden with 330,000.
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries has launched a website to help motorists check if their car has been affected.
Jannelle, I had mine replaced as soon as I was told about it -- BUT it was replaced with the very same make -- and I have heard some REPLACEMENTS are now dangerous -- I wanted mine removed altogether -- as we drove for decades without the darn things but apparently that is not allowed.
