Does your car have a 'killer' airbag?

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) warns that 1.6 million cars across the country are “ticking time bombs”.

They contain faulty Takata and Akpha airbags that have been recalled.

The ACCC says NSW and Victoria have the highest number of vehicles with airbags that need replacing, with 448,000 400,000 respectively.

In those states nearly 10,000 vehicles have the Alpha airbag and shouldn’t be on the road, says ACCC chairwoman Delia Rickard.

“If you have one of these cars, don't drive it … there's a one in two chance that if there is a collision, those bags could explode [and] spray metal shrapnel all over the car," she told the ABC.

Toyota has 582,000 cars affected, followed by Honda at 436,000 and Holden with 330,000.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries has launched a website to help motorists check if their car has been affected.

Jannelle,  I had mine replaced as soon as I was told about it -- BUT it was replaced with the very same make -- and I have heard some REPLACEMENTS are now dangerous -- I wanted mine removed altogether -- as we drove for decades without the darn things but apparently that is not allowed.

I was told that the Takata airbag was replaced at some time, however, there is no proof of this ever occuring.  When I contacted the Dealer last week to book in to have the "replacement" faulty bag replaced I was informed that this could not occur until after March 2019. It would appear that the Dealership is not concerned at all.  I have a Nissan Pulsar.

Mitsubishi  have been very proactive, replaced both of my suspect airbags in my vehicle  BEFORE  it became a public concern, just quietly went ahead and sent out recalls  to affected customers  and fixed the problem promptly

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries website is great, easy to use and a quick reponse. I strongly recommend it to any who have concerns as to whether their vehicle is affected.

Have to agree OM, Toot posted it in another thread yesterday, and thanks Janelle for the separate thread today.

Simple and fast … identified my vehicle correctly and responded accordingly.

Holden has made little/no effort to replace the airbags. I’ve been asking since Nov because I lived  the NT and this makes it doubly dangerous.  Holden has yet to tell me that my car is affected eventhough it’s been on the ACC and Choice lists for about 9 months.   2 months ago my Holden dealer denied it’s cars were affected! TAKATA went bankrupt so getting the airbags is difficult/impossible.  I won’t drive a car that’s a time bomb so my beloved Astra minus its airbags has gone to the big car yard in the sky to be sold for spare parts.  I’ve lost a lot of money but the thought of my grandkids being killed by shrapnel is just too awful.

At a meeting this morning, we were told that everyone needs to check the status of the airbag on their vehicle by using the FCAI website you have listed in this article.  We were also told that if we don't check and the airbag is found to be listed as faulty, we will be unable to re-register the vehicle until the replacement is undertaken.

This wouldn't be so bad if there are so many faulty airbags out there, but I had mine replaced late last year and my vehicle is still showing as having a faulty airbag.  I wonder whether I will be able to re-register?  I have emailed FCAI and am awaiting a reply.  Fingers crossed, I get one.

Thank you for this FCA website.  I have just this last minute done it. So quick and easy!!!
