Electricity

So I just got my bill. After the last bill I decided it was time to be a little less civilised and turn off the reverse cycle airconditioning. So I saved $100 to get my second highest bill ever.

I noticed after dissecting the bill that $75 won't go away as its a service bill and another section was GST. So actually if I switch the power off it would be $75 + another $7.50 GST = $82.50 in unavoidable costs.

Now I have been quite cold saving this $100 and the bill indicated I used more power this year than last year which is rather odd since I was using the heater last year and I had more people in the house.

I am looking to reduce this bill. Some people switch their hotwater service off and only reheat every third day. Does it pay off.

I am checking the off peak rates and thinking I will cook in the mornings and just reheat food at dinner time.

What about spending the $4000 and covering the roof with solar panels? Is it worth it? I already have solar hot water, lights are all energy efficient etc etc.

I did buy an induction hotplate. Are they expensive to cook with?

Make sure you check your energy supplier's website because they all charge different hours for different times and not all states are the same times.

Energy Australia's Off-Peak times are 10 pm -  7.00 am.

I keep telling everyone

Origin offers the best value for money

also investing heaps into renewable and even offer renewable options

Thermal suits are a good idea, never have to worry about heating bills then.

Remember to buy one with a trapdoor.

We know you love men in tights

jealous????

No mate you keep them men in tights  and your tights  too

have fun

I see too much protesting here, it's all right you're among friends. We don't care what side of the fence you're on , hahaha

Australia set to become the most expensive country for electricity in the world as bills surge by 18 per cent

South Australia is set to overtake Denmark as the most expensive place for electricity bills in the world, according to an expert.

Yep

price of uneconomic renewables

Depending on your retailer Attila.  At least one is going up 19 % and they haven't all said what their price increase will be.

We have been in the top countries for more than a year now.

Several businesses are now closing down.  One not far from us, his electricity bill went from $ 80,000 per year to $ 180,000 this year and now this lot will be on top of that.  He said it will make the business unviable.

prices of electricity in Australia.

We don't have a choice in WA Sandi.

What a load of cod fish and drama. Australia is No  14  on the list with 13 countries having more expensive electricity.

Electric cars.....

Child miners aged four living a hell on Earth so YOU can drive an electric car: Awful human cost in squalid Congo cobalt mine that Michael Gove didn't consider in his 'clean' energy crusade

Eight-year-old Dorsen (pictured left being told off by a man, circled, and right, having a sack put on his shoulders), is one of 40,000 children working daily in the mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Here, for a wage of just 8p a day, he is made to check the rocks for the tell-tale chocolate-brown streaks of cobalt - the prized ingredient essential for the batteries that power electric cars. And it's feared that thousands more children could be about to be dragged into this hellish daily existence - after the historic pledge made by Britain to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2040 and switch to electric vehicles. Pictured inset is Monica, four, who also works in the mines.

Yes Attila and this goes on for our mobile phones and so many other things -- with these poor souls working like this -- also for gold/diamonsand many other things that most have no idea about

As far as switching off your hot water for 3 days NO -- as it would have cooled down quite a bit and so you would not be saving -- rather using MORE to heat it up again-- I have an OFF PEAK hot water system

I won't be moving to SA...wow I am totally amazed at the cost of the utilities over there.

$1,060.18 cents is the total we have spent on electricity to date from 1 January this year.  We  use the gas heater in winter (elect.for cooking and have solar hot water) and only pay the supply charge every month of around $25....so far we have not had the heater on...have not needed it.

However, the costs are going up more in future (electricity) to around 20% more so I understand.

I came in late Rosret but think you may have missed the boat with solar panels, depending where you live and your retailer, because the amount paid for feeding energy into the grid today is very little.

I spent every spare dollar I had to have panels installed in 2011. I have had only one electricity bill since for $70.72 (when I was a little heavy-handed with the reverse cycle A/C) and have been paid $5500. So I am well ahead on my $10K investment.

However the panels do deteriorate producing slightly less power each year and with the skyrocketing electricity prices in the blackout State (SA) I will eventually be making less above my bill, but Im not greedy.

If you still have questions on solar have a read of the Whirlpool website as I did (for days) prior to making my decision

I think they should do away with the gst charge on electricity and gas bills. That would be a nice way of paying the public back for virtually giving our resources away to overseas interests.

Excellent point Robi but someone would have to make up the tax shortfall and I believe  yet another tax would be introduced

ABC has a news item on using your hot water system as a battery with solar power.  could be interesting ....

'When you’re on low incomes like you and I these things are really stressful': Awkward moment Alan Jones teases Sunrise host Samantha Armytage when she complains about her power bill... despite her '$500,000' a year salary

She's the high profile host of Sunrise who reportedly earns an annual salary of $500,000. And Samantha Armytage has been made fun of by radio talk back host Alan Jones after protesting the cost of her electricity during a segment about low income earners and their savings on Wednesday. After the Sunrise host used the live TV segment as an opportunity to complain about her latest bill, Alan sarcastically quipped back: 'When you’re on low incomes like you and I Sam, these things are really stressful.'

Maybe it is time to have another look at nuclear power.   Look at how well France is going with the cheapest electricity in Europe.

France derives about 75% of its electricity from nuclear energy, due to a long-standing policy based on energy security. This share may be reduced to 50% by 2025. France is the world's largest net exporter of electricity due to its very low cost of generation, and gains over €3 billion per year from this. The country has been very active in developing nuclear technology. Reactors and especially fuel products and services have been a significant export. About 17% of France's electricity is from recycled nuclear fuel.

Yes agree . It it should be left to anybody who can create a business and supply electricity without Govt support or interference .

ANYONE that suggests nuclear power has rocks in their heads -- have you even noted the cost of building and the dangers of this,  not to mention the short life AND the extreme danger of radiation leaks and the inability of getting rid of the waste that is never ever safe!?

Check out the problems that those that have them are now having and the horrors of the leakage and what it has already done to the planet,  look at Fukushima and what happening there and the USA/Canada/ and many in the UK

Yes not only are we selling them uranium we also collect their uranium waste for storage ??

I can only ask why ?

The bloody uranium should never have been taken out of the ground -- when speaking to Elders in the Nth -- they would never go near that hill -- they always called it  -- the SICK HILL -- they know a darn lot more than us whities do.

Since finding Uranium and the things that have been done with it since are atrocious and threaten the life of the planet and all on it

It is all about the almighty dollars Suze -- very sad that $$$ mean more than anything to so many rule makers

Bump

I have a very good wood heater and I buy/collect wood during the summer for winter.

Get off your bums and stop moaning.
