Eurovision 2018

The live final of Eurovision gets underway Sunday morning at 5am AEST from Lisbon, Portugal.

While there is a clear fan favourite this year in Cyprus heading into the live final, to my eyes and ears, the competition is wide open for an upset from left-field.

I've shared below the semi-final performances of the top 6 in voting from the semi-finals. Which performance is your favourite? Who do you think will win? Lithuania is my favourite!

Cyprus

Israel

Lithuania

France

Sweden

Germany

Australia

Ok Hola I stand corrected ( if I can stand at all after all the turps!!) , but you must admit 44 yrs is a long time between drinks and people then were wearing wide bottom pants and had flowers in their hair, not really a good look ! It was in the last century that Eurovision made an impact??

Let's face it this contest  now is not all about finding the best song is it? Its really all about my country is better than yours! Australia in 20th place overall says it all!!

The Israeli singer may have been quirky and amusing but the song surely was not the best that all those countries and their songwriters could come up with? If Israel was really serious(and not spoofing) it would have entered Miss Nasrin Kadri an Israeli singer with Arab links who is surely more suitable for the task.( check her out on you tube singing "Dod Meamerika" an atmospheric rendition from her part of the world.)

Hi Sophie I've never tippled in my life but I have been known to knock back a few but not lately. My present beverage is Chinese Pu'er teas which have almost a cult status around the world and is almost a hobby with tea drinkers and collectors alike. CHEERS.

Hi sageman - You're doing pretty good making it 44 years between drinks. I am a tea drinker as well and nothing can come close to a refreshing drink, the odd Coffee is great also. My family took me to a beautiful restaurant near the Carrington Hotel in Katoomba. All the Mothers were given a small glass of Champers. I took a sip and by the look on my face, it says it all. Totally disgusting and bitter, in my opinion. My son took a photo of me sipping it , They couldn't stop laughing. Hope you have a nice evening.

Thanks HOLA

I used to live at Glenbrook in the Lower Blue Mts and knew Katoomba well .I recall a nice restaurant called "The Paragon", is that the one you visited?? By the way you may have misread my post. I was referring to the 44 yrs elapsed  since the last time Eurovision was able to celebrate any significant piece of songwriting such as your favourite "Waterloo". I am not a teetotaler and like the very occasional drink!! Its now a case of everything in moderation for me,!

Hi sageman - Trust me to misunderstand your posting. We did visit "The Paragon". a lovely restaurant, very crowded. I believe they will be closing down soon as the place seems to be too expensive to restore. Their chocolates were $12.50 per 100grms. We went to the restaurant next to the Carrington. Lovely food. I felt sorry to see the interior of the Carrington, it was so dark and dingy. The chandeliers needed a good clean and parts were missing. Now the Hydro Majestic is so classy and the restoration is fantastic. Would give it a 10 star rating. I recommend everyone who is in Sydney to go and have a look at it. The train stops almost opposite it.

Totally disappointed.. at a loss for words..Israel..no no no!

However HOLA..could you choose my lotto numbers..pretty please!!

Believe me Sophie it was only a guess. She was something different and I think the judges look for that. As for picking your Lotto numbers, I'm flat out trying to win an arguement.!!!

Germany and Denmark were outstanding, clean cut and no grandstanding. Estonia had the best perfomance but unfortuantely the nature of this songfest is not for the likes of their representative. Jessica did OK but her perfomance was nothing spectacular. Australia has one flag only, I was disappointed that she had to carry another as well. When will they learn!!!

Surprising that Jessica Mauboy got the lowest public vote. Her score was only lifted by the Judges vote. Also surprising that the majority of judges voted Austria so high. In my own personal voting Austria was at the bottom and the public vote also ranked his performance low. My favourites were Israel, Czech Republic and Bulgaria. Congrats to Israel.

... not a big fan of Eurovision - judges always seem to pick the "super quirky or just plain downright crap"!

Was very surprised Jessica got such a low score?  The Israeli "chicken dance chick" IMO was utter rubbish!

Jessica was a bit awkard in her delivery, and her final placing in the songfest was the result. Anyway Australia is not part of Europe and entering on the pretext that many "Australians" are of European extract is a lame excuse. Jessica does not even fit that bill, as far as I know. Should an Australian be selected to represent the Nation in Jerusalem then lets have a real European.

Sophie, I'm so surprised that you were disappointed because I was not. You see I had no expectation that there would be in any way a good result.  I think that the winner has only confirmed my points of view which I touched upon in  earlier (sober) posts. To my mind, and I for one have a wide taste in music , this overly hyped event is mind numbing in the extreme. I believe it to be Irrelevant, anachronistic and a mish mash of, for the most part, mediocre performers singing forgettable songs. I agree niemakawa Jessica was ok and well done for trying, but her song was fairly ordinary as was many others with one or two notable exceptions. I Think maybe Eurovision is past its due date ?

Hello  Sageman..

I had high hopes! After the win of Conchita Wurst in 2014 and her lovely singing voice..I thought people would embrace Elina Nechayeva from Estonia..not only was her singing superb..the entire  production was magnificent..

I believe in the future we'll see robots taking over the Eurovision contest!

By the way..like you..I am not an afternoon tippler..I was only pulling your leg..although I do love Chinese tea :)

At least Conchita is better looking than Netta from Israel. My rellies in Tel Aviv are celebrating like mad, hahah

Netta is a woman same cannot be said of the Conchita.

You got something against women with moustaches and beards ninny? Now that's something for the sex discrimination board to deal with.

Nothing against women per se , I was stating a fact. I know some people ignores such things. You old "snowflake"

Listen Brocky, don't be a smart arse. As for being an "old snowflake", I am neither old nor deprived of blood, I have a healthy tan.

Now buzz off.

Sageman

Perhaps Eurovision should take some hints from The Voice on Channel 9

SAGEMAN,    just letting you know,  i got a great dvd of CHRIS BOTTI,      found it on ebay,

sad to say i didnt watch much of it,    i did see one good act,     but didnt get his name,   but a catchy song,    with bits of him playing the keyboards,   drums,      he was good,       i have got the last show recorded,  but not watched it yet,

Cats good to hear you found a great DVD of Chris Botti, seems you are a fan now. He can certainly blow a horn and he sometimes appears with some great fellow musicians, a concert in Boston comes to mind!!

hi SAGEMAN,   yes,  always good to hear of another great musician,   when you go on u tube,  can get some great bits of him at different concerts,   i love the sax playing on one version of YEAR OF THE CAT,     there are a dozen versions of it,  but one ,  with AL STEWART singing,  has a break and the most brilliant sax playing,    puts shivers up your spine,     love my music,

Winners are winners. Great that the next Eurovision will be held in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel. They deserve it.
