fair comment
A comment by a 57 year old grabbed my attention and worth sharing . The article I was reading was about workfair and coalition submissions or deletions .
At 57, I'm probably almost the last of the generation who remember post offices routinely being opened between 9am and 12pm Saturdays, in line with the retailers. At a time too when my parents paid at our local post office, such a thing called a radio license. But it was for the television, black and white at the time.
As a taxpayer, I'm tired of the massive costs of this Monday to Thursday fly in/fly out federal pollies. Save money by keeping them in Canberra for the parliamentary sitting duration. We pay for their Canberra digs anyway. No family reunions either whilst in Canberra during the parliamentary sittings, unless the pollie pays for it out of their own pocket.
The parliamentary dining room should have some entitlement cuts as well.
The prime minister should be required to pay rent at the lodge (is it fixed yet) and a levy to cover meals other than state sponsored occasions.
And I'm tired of paying first class fares and accommodation, and palatial offices plus staff for our many former PMs. A sunset clause of five years after ceasing the office of PM.
And we should look at the over generous out of step super that Mr Abbott and his contemporaries are still entitled to. This should be downgraded to match that of the new members of parliament who do not get this antiquated over entitled taxpayer gift.
My list is not exhaustive. I've given great thought regarding the end of the age of entitlement and how much money as a taxpayer I could save.
All I know is - with an elderly parent in care, I could not imagine the staff who look after my father so well, attending to his most undignified accidents and needs with dignity, care, good grace and patience, never debasing is humanity - how they could be told that a low base wage is all they deserve for nights, weekends and holidays even Christmas.
