Flying lava hits tourist boat

An explosion caused by lava oozing into the ocean has sent molten rock crashing through the roof of a sightseeing boat off Hawaii’s Big Island, injuring 23 people.

The “lava bomb,” which burst from the water near the boat as molten rock poured into the ocean, landed on the roof of the vessel and crashed into the seating area, according to a report in The Guardian.

One passenger broke her thigh bone while three others were hospitalised and the rest suffered burns, scrapes and superficial injuries.

The lava comes from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano which has been spewing gas and molten rock since it erupted in May.

The tourists were aboard a tour boat that gives visitors the chance to see lava plunging into the water.

The owner and captain of the boat, Shane Turpin, told the Guardian that he didn’t see the explosion that hit his boat and that the tour had been going for about 20 minutes and was 500 yards offshore when the incident occurred.

“As we were exiting the zone, all of a sudden everything around us exploded,” he said. “It was everywhere.”

Would you ever travel close to an erupting volcano?

500 yards from an erupting volcano is not very far.   What possesses people to take such risks?

I was just reading in the Sun-Herald newspaper on Sunday an article in the traveller section, a reader was asking, "I want to visit Hawaii, will my visit be impacted by the volcano"? The advice given was, after a long winded section and ended with " Actually it is an incredible time to witness the creation of earth. Visitors can book helicopter tours as well as boat tours to see the lava. The rest of the Hawaiian islands are unaffected".  After reading Ben's comments I would stay well clear of that place.

Been to the island in 2017 No way would I get up close and personal with an active volcano.

Being so close to an erupting volcano was a very irresponsible thing to have done and the captain of the vessel should be responsible.

Also, the passengers surely would have to take some responsibility too for being on the boat

Why blame the boat owner? The passengers are all adults who no doubt voluntarily paid to go there. They have to take responsibility for their own stupidity. Watch for the law suits to ensue. Hawaii is the USA after all!

I think that the volcano and laver bombs brings the reality that life on this beautiful planet is not as simple as some  attempt to make us believe. What we are seeing is the tip of the iceberg. Look at the plastic in the ocean, not the volcano, to see where danger really lies. Who is causing the plastic to be there, it’s not nature.

Yes Concerned,  Mother nature might be fighting back at us humans that are and have been wrecking the place for eons

Ill be there in December...cant wait

Be prepared 4 a great adventure

Been there last month, going into Hilo was not recommended but we went to Kona on the other side of the island of Hawai'i. The air was not very clean there either and you could smell sulphur, would not be good for people with respiratory problems. Ted Wards, you'll have a great time, just follow directions and you will be OK.

Yes , that’s right PlanB , we can’t mess with nature with impunity. Time to go back to PlanA to get things right , respect and honour to our creator and respect for our fellow man. Maybe we could ask the next visitor at our door when that will be ?
