Freeze-dried faecal pills could treat obesity

Scientists are planning a clinical trial where 20 obese people will take freeze-dried faecal pills each day to see if it helps them to lose weight.

The study , to take place this year, involves fecal samples taken from healthy donors, freeze dried, and distributed in pill form. Feces contains microbes that, once transplanted, can be used to effectively treat gut infections. There is also some evidence that suggests that these microbes could affect body weight.

In a 2013 study, mice underwent intestinal microbe transplants taken from four sets of human twins. One twin was of healthy weight and the other was obese. The mice who received an obese twin’s microbes gained weight, no matter their diet.

Other research has found that heritable strains of gut microbiotas can influence obesity.

If all goes well, this study may mean that microbe treatments could be used as a method to treat obesity.

What do you think of this idea? Would the potential benefits of this 'medicine' make it easier to stomach?

I've been fat for over 40 years, and even on a current  strict diet of 700 cals a day, I am barely losing anything.  At age 67, I have everything to lose and nothing to gain, (don't mind the pun). So I am happy to give it a go.

I guess if it is as you say soph -- might work-- many people that are over weight are just that -- no fault of their own

I would only have to pay mind as to what those capsules contained and my appetite would pack up and leave home...

I wouldn't only lose the kilo's, I would starve to death.

Wouldn't matter what weight I was then :(

Would that still apply cranky IF it was life or death ?

I would hope i would never have to make that choice Plan B..

Until then.....

I feel the same way about Blood transfusions and NO I am not a JW just gives me the horrors thinking of what is in someone elses blood,  there is no way they can test for all sicknesses  some they would not even know about yet --  I remember a friend was a blood donor and she was diagnosed with cancer 7 days after she had given blood

I guess everything we do has an element of fear now. and if we were honest we all  hesitate about proceeding with anything that involves the safety of our health.

I have a phobia about unisex toilets..

I see that sign and I envy dogs who just have to look for a suitable tree.

There is always that old truism....."you are what you eat". I would not be eating any of those pills.

Very simple way to control obesity - just control what travells over the bottom lip. (I dont pretend that is easy, just effective when you do it).

PlanB --  If I hadn't had 4 units of blood given to me with my Heart Surgery I wouldn't be here today. I used to be a Blood Doner and when I was over the operation I went to the Blood Bank and wanted to donate blood, as a Thank You for receiving mine, but they said I was too old to donate now, I felt quite put out. When you choose between life and death, living seems more rewarding.

Yes HOLA I know what you mean -- however every time I have had a major operation I have signed a waiver to NOT have a blood transfusion

KFC, not ALWAYS correct re the eating of food -- many people are just genetically BIG and it doesn't matter how little they eat they can't seem to loose weight,  I have never had that trouble myself but I have known those that do.

PlanB --  A friend of mine feels the same way as you do regarding blood transfusions. He was to have major surgery in a few weeks and  was told he could donate his own blood and when it was time for his surgery he had his own blood put back.  It's worth keeping this in mind.

YEs HOLA friends of mine did that too, costs quite a bit to do it I think

Cancer is not contagious and one cannot catch cancer  through  blood PlanB

Cancer can travel via the blood Banjo, they are still not positive about the transfusions but if a person is immune deficient there is a chance,  plus many other things can be spread, they never knew about AIDS for many years and there are many other things that can be caught through blood, plus everyone has different antibodies in their blood due to the different things they have been exposed to through their life, which can have a detrimental effect if they are not compatible with the person being transfused
