One of my favourite pictures from the 2018 Sony Photography Awards. It's called :

‘The Child and the Reindeers’

Every morning, all the reindeer are released so they can graze all day and at night they all come back themselves. Here we can see one of the Tsataan children from Mongolia taking care of his reindeer before the cold night comes.

I love the expression on his face!

Great pic Bijou!

They sure start them young in Mongolia. Here's a pre teen training an eagle in Upper Dayan.

Magnificent pictures guys. I  have always been intrigued by Mongolia and it's on my bucket list.

The Dukha people living in Northern Mongolia have a magical vibration with the animals in their region. The type of bond they have with their eco-system is one that the world needs to learn about and remember. They embrace their rugged terrain, utilizing trained reindeer and wolves. This little guy has done a good day's work. Reminds me of childhood holidays on my grandparents farm in far north Siberia!

What absolutely stunning pictures..a sight for sore eyes..thanks  people..

Micha you remind me of the Ancient Mariner!

Ancient Mariner, huh? I feel a poem coming on Sophie. I won a prize in primary school for reciting the Rime of the Ancient  Mariner.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

And now the storm-blast came, and he
Was tyrannous and strong:
He struck with his o’ertaking wings,
And chased us south along.

With sloping masts and dipping prow,
As who pursued with yell and blow
Still treads the shadow of his foe,
And foward bends his head,
The ship drove fast, loud roared the blast,
And southward aye we fled.

And now there came both mist and snow,
And it grew wondrous cold:
And ice, mast-high, came floating by,
As green as emerald.

And through the drifts the snowy clifts
Did send a dismal sheen:
Nor shapes of men nor beasts we ken –
The ice was all between.

The ice was here, the ice was there,
The ice was all around:
It cracked and growled, and roared and howled,
Like noises in a swound!

In mist or cloud, on mast or shroud,
It perched for vespers nine;
Whiles all the night, through fog-smoke white,
Glimmered the white moonshine.

The Sun now rose upon the right:
Out of the sea came he,
Still hid in mist, and on the left
Went down into the sea.

The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew,
The furrow followed free;
We were the first that ever burst
Into that silent sea.

Such a long time since I read that poem Micha..I am sure you deserved your prize!

They've even named a rose after the Ancient Mariner!

Magnificent Bijou! With all the rain you've been having in the West, the wildflowers should be out in full force!

Love the Milky Way image in your opening post too :)

What a great photo. Stunning, thanks Bijou.

Ditto re the Milky Way up top.

You may enjoy one of my favourite time lapse videos featuring Uluru and the Milky Way, if you haven't already seen it.

:) Thanks KIAH and RnR!

RnR, I haven't seen that video before and thank you for putting it up. It's phenomenal. It's an incredible feeling just to watch it.

I agree..it's a beautiful video and a stunning picture also Bijou!

that was stunning,   just beauiful,    thanks for putting it up,

Photographer Grant Thomas was named British Underwater Photographer of the Year 2018, and this photo won in the British Waters Wide Angle category.Thomas is quoted as saying: "I have always been fascinated by over-under photography, connecting the everyday terrestrial world that we all know with the less familiar underwater secrets. I chose Loch Lomond as the location for this shot due to its idyllic scenery, water access, and friendly swans. My initial idea was to frame a split shot of one swan feeding below the surface of the water but when I noticed how comfortable they were around me I was confident, with some patience, I could get that magical shot of the two. It was mid-day, sun high in the sky, when I waded slowly into the shallow water, allowing the swans to become comfortable with my presence. When they began searching for food below the water line I just had to wait for that perfect moment of synchronicity."

Photographed at Luss Pier, Loch Lomond, Scotland.

Beautiful shot. Thanks Bijou.

Beautiful image Bijou :)

Stunning colours Sophie, thanks! Do you remember feeding time at The Entrance on the Central Coast, NSW?

Source: dreamtime.com

I remember The Entrance pelican feeding well as used to live on the Central Coast, NSW at one time.

Seem to remember a pelican took a chihuahua to snack on at one time. Big fuss back then as I recall. Others may remember the incident better.

Excellent pictures ladies. Bijou the swans are terrific.

We've taken the kids several times to watch the pelicans feeding at The Entrance, Bijou. Used to be one of my wife's favourite short holiday stops when they were little.

Same here Ray, we've taken the kids and the grand kids.

Great pictures all. Bijou I particularly liked the "Milky way over Harvey Dam". Stunning!

Lovely shot Ray. It's interesting to see how quickly these birds mature.

I agree..it's beautiful..

These pictures were published a couple of years ago,but remain firm favorites...

The wonders of space have never looked so close than in these captivating photographs taken over one of Britain’s most spectacular castles.

Billions of years old and burning lightyears away, the stars and planets within the Milky Way are seemingly within touching distance as their vivid colours sparkle over the sleeping island of St Michael’s Mount.

The streak of shimmering stars scattered across the crystal clear sky dwarf the tiny island, near Marazion in Cornwall.

The extraordinary scene was photographed by Alessio Putzu, who managed to capture ethereal colours of the galaxy.

To capture the ethereal colours of the galaxy Alessio Putzu needed a long shutter exposure of four minutes to let in enough light. He also used a piece of equipment called an ‘astro tracker’, which is aligned with the Pole Star to follow the revolving sky.

Simply stunning..and the castle is well worth a visit if one gets to Cornwall..

Thanks for those incredible pics Sophie. My wife and I visited the castle some 12 years ago and yes, it's certainly worth the trip to Cornwall. We visited Devon as well and some of the surrounding countryside.

Read today, lots of lightening bolts are causing massive fires in the UK. Seems the heatwave has ended after some heavy rain. Bet the Brits are heaving a huge sigh of relief.

Hello Banjo

Porthleven, Cornwall where we attended a wedding a couple of weeks ago is being battered by massive storms..we're in constant touch with relatives there and really hope the dreadful weather won't last too long.

Really hoping St Bartholomews Church can withstand the bad weather..it's quite old and built in the 1800s. This is what it looked like a day or so ago...

Glad you guys returned before the big rains!

With all the rain we've been having here in the West..the wildflower season is on it's way ..if you're lucky you may catch a beauty like this orchid in the South West region..

Have a great day!

Stunning is the only way to describe that spider orchid Sophie, thanks for posting!

How beautiful.

Oops, you don't say!

“A five-month-old mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) reacts to a visitor near a bushmeat market in Malabo, a city on Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea. This animal was brought over from mainland Africa, most likely as an infant. Once fully grown, many such pets are sold into the bushmeat trade and consumed as food. Though this country has laws on the books stating that taking primates from the wild is illegal, poaching continues to be rampant both in Equatorial Guinea and many other African nations."

Thank you KIAH, that picture pulls at my heart strings :)

Careniup is part of a chain of wetlands in the Gwelup region/Perth/WA, used by Aboriginals for hunting food. A lot of it was drained for housing in the 1990s, but some sections of it has been preserved as a wetland conservation area.

Careniup is a typical wetland vegetation complex (e.g. Flooded Gum & Paperbark Trees) with most of it still intact.

Careniup is home to more then 150 native birds, plants, amphibians and invertebrates. Some of these are Endangered, Priority or Specially Protected, inclusive of the White Faced Heron (left), Rainbow Bee-eater (middle) and Great Egret (right).

It's a magical place!

I agree Bijou..it's a magical place. Used to be quite hidden but now the secret is out..still..it's nice many more people are able to enjoy it!

Thank you for reminding me it's there :)

Had a look on the map. You're lucky to have such an unspoilt area in the centre of Perth. My grandkids would love to go exploring there!

It certainly looks magical. I'd love to put on my wellies and have a wander around that wetland. Thanks Bijou.
