Getting a good night's sleep could be simpler

According to the Sweet Dreams survey, there are eight simple tips to getting a good night's sleep. They are:

• Be in bed by 22:39 — and try to sleep

• Ensure your room temperature is 16.1 degrees Celsius

• Put on clean bedding

• Make sure the room is totally dark, painted white, and tidied

• Avoid your phone for 37 minutes before sleep

• Read a few pages of a paper book (not an e-reader)

• Sleep on your right side, with legs curled up

• Don’t cuddle up with your partner.

Try having a HUGE stretch -- from toes to finger tips and then relax slowly--  works most times

Dont agree with the last one!whoopee:-)))))

Sleep is an interesting issue and I have read several books on it and tried many techniques mainly cos of my own sleep issues. In my case basically going to sleep I find is the easy part and usually within 5 mins.  I try to wear myself out during the day (not excessively). The problem is staying asleep, cos if I go to sleep say around 11Pm, I then wake about 3AM. fully alert and ready to go.  Its probably an hour at least before going back to sleep for about 1 to 2 hours. Sleep tablets I found that work are Endep (or their generic) but usually only take one every couple weeks or so if I get a few nights like that.  They appear to be non habit forming. Also tried Circadin prescribed by psyhiatrist but they dont seem to work for me.  These tablets need to be taken at least say couple of hours before going to bed. When unable to go to sleep after waking a Panadol or cup of tea helps.  All comments welcome !

Nothing is 100% reliable..however this works for me..I usually have six hours of very refreshing sleep and that's all I need...

We move through five sleep cycles during the night..each of these cycles lasts 90 minutes...in order to get the most out of my sleep I try to go to bed as close to my cycle as possible..

For example.. I like to wake up around 6.10 am..therefore..if I get to bed at 10.40 pm (which does not happen very often)..or 12.10 (which is more likely) then I shall without fail awaken at 6.10am.

This may not help you...but it's something else to consider..

I usually have trouble falling asleep. I usually go to bed about 11pm. Last night I was almost asleep when suddenly the house at the back's security lights all came on at the same time. I had to get up to see that there were no intruders. When I got back to bed, no luck, still awake 1 hour later. I sometimes try the Panadol which do help sometimes.

I am a four hour sleeper -- wide awake after that

I'm similar PlanB. Have been that way since a my teens. I've given up worrying about it now. I get up and do stuff, read, watch TV, internet surf or whatever. Then a few hours later I get another few hours sleep. Luckily, timeframes aren't an issue as I live alone.

Yes same here RnR -- and retired so do not have to get up and change trains etc ---

Early to bed every night asleep in about 5 mins....4 hours later wide awake...then awake for an hour or so lying there....then another 2 hours sleep, then awake again dozing on and off for rest of he time.  Up at 6 a.m. every morning

A pain in the proverbial.  When younger would sleep 7 hours straight..not waking once.

For anyone with restless legs, I didn't know that Magnesium was a cure until my surgeon told me who did my hip replacement.  I now take one tablet every day and so far, no symptoms so fingers crossed, they are gone forever.

Magnesium is great for cramps as well Toot.

I was having the restless legs but they have stopped now -- thank goodness -- still, suffer from crippling cramps  -- and I do take the Magnesium for them which is wonderful and helps a lot

Hi Toot, How are you feeling after the operation, are you still in rehab? A few of my friends have had it done also and are  now as good as new. I have found some very good tablets called Osteo-K and take 2 a day. It contains Calcium and K2 + Vitamin D. It says on the bottle K2 in Osteo -K also helps keep Calcium away from the areas where it shouldn't be, such as your arteries and helps support your cardiovascular health.

Doing fine Hola, have to go to the hospital for 4 hours of rehab twice a week for four weeks, I've had two so far, two to go.  Your Osteo K sounds like a good find Hola, calcium so important as we get older but useless unless combined with Vitamin D in the one tablet.

Great news Toot. All the best for the rest of your program.
