Grant for Cooking Demonstration

Hi
I'm organising a Healthy Aging Forum, and have secured a speaker for You and Your Medicines, and for Healthy Mind sessions.
Now I am trying to get funding to run a cooking demonstration and provide a healthy lunch between the sessions.
So far, I have tried the Stay on your Feet, and the SWAPIT people - in one case, not seen as value for money, in the other, the time frame is wrong.. and because I'm in a small country town, I have to work in with presenter availability.

Any ideas, please ?

What with - mole asses cake ?

Kojimensshed, this may be a stupid question but do you have a Men's Shed nearby? They could have the proverbial sausage sizzle, make some toys to sell, that sort of thing.

Edited. You could try your local RSL as they usually give out grants during the year, also the local council, and Lion's Club, Rotary etc.

I like molasses cake  Should say liked, haven't made it for about 30 years as nobody else liked it and our tastes do change over time.

Pre sell tickets for the lunch use proceeds to buy ingredients ,at least that way you will know how many to cater for, good luck wobbly

How small is your town???? and am interested in which State it is in? now back to the topic. Have you a CWA in the town???, Some years ago when we had the 150th celebrations here in WA we had just moved into a very small country town, the people there wanted to have a 150th Ball and because the celebrations were Statewide there was no one able to cater for it so we, the P&C got our heads together and organised the catering for it, we raised a lot of money (for a small country town) from the tickets, we distributed it to little projects around the town. It was a very good fundraiser.

Lol redhead, I think he said something about 'heathy eating' :-) :)

Thanks everyone.. I co-ordinate the Mens shed, and we are hosting the event, so don't want my guys cooking rather than learning.. also, as someone said, the emphasis is on health.

Our RSL is down to about 2 guys under 70... and CWA died a while back !

The catering is not the issue, its getting funds to cover the dieticians travelling, supplies etc.

Anyway, I now may have it sorted as I'm trying the IGA community chest fund.

Deanna -- are you in the Great Southern ?

Anyway, thank you all again for the great ideas.

Cheers

Got to ask, is a dietician is really necessary, esp if that is the high cost component?

Healthy cooking is not rocket science and IMHO 90% of the problem for many is sourcing cheaper ingredients. Shopping must be part of the learning and is the basis for cheap, nutritious meals. Otherwise people just continue to buy spuds and 3star mince from the big two.

Asian recipes for example, seem to solve both problems. Add tuna and red salmon salads and you are away.

Can I suggest that whatever you do you invite the local pollie for a photo opportunity and write something short and light for the local paper? That way you get publicity for the shed and forthcoming events.

Thanks Nautilus.. the reason for the dietician is that most health agencies will only fund for professionals to deliver..

The session we did previously with high school kids, they did lamb kebabs, chicken stirfry and moroccan beef burgers... all very easy and quick, and as you say, asian food is yummmmm !

We have a great local pollie.. come from our town, and would visit for the opening of a book.. we also hope to have an official opening of our shed a few weeks later (or before if I get off my bum and get the kitchen painted !)..

Thanks for the great ideas

Cheers

Tezza,

My hat is off to you for taking action and particularly for directing some of your energies at helping schoolchildren.

Unfortunately, having seen others go that way myself there is not a great deal of practical support for men's health and welfare issues at federal level. There are four federal ministers involved (at least),

The Hon. Nicola Roxon MP, Minister for Health and Ageing

The Hon Mark Butler, Minister for Mental Health and Ageing

The Hon Warren Snowden, Minister for Indigenous Health

The Hon Catherine King, Parliamentray Secretary for Health and Ageing

but before approaching any, it is prudent to kinow how to frame a request for assistance and to whom it should be directed.

That is why I would suggest having a heart to heart with your local pollie to work out a strategy for now and the future. The pollie's electoral staff are a great source of assistance if handled well.

I applaud the men's sheds initiative. However I am very aware how few there are and the difficulties in setting one up and providing funding.

KojiMensShed, Tezza, I live in Perth but I come from the town south of you, a couple mile of the main Highway, with a name like yours you had to come from the Great Southern of WA. I had an Uncle who lived in your District. My brothers now have the farm that was Dad's and Mums. Lovely spot down there. Good luck with what you are doing, let us know how it goes. Cheers Deanna
