Guidance please re my inheritance and should it effect my husband's Newstart?

Hi, this question is for a Centrelink/Newstart expert.  I have just received a large inheritance and I am afraid if I report it to Centrelink that they will stop my husband's Newstart payment.  I am 61 and my husband is 59 and everything from my money will be in my name only.  1. Should I tell Centrelink? 2. Will it effect my husband's Newstart payment? Thank you

I am no expert, but you can phone Centrelink and talk to them anonymously.  I am sure you would get some useful information this way, as it does not seem to be a particularly complex situation.  I am pretty sure that Centrelink would view your inheritance as an asset rather than income, although I think they would treat you as a couple as far as your inheritance is concerned.  But it is better to know all this than wonder.  Good luck!

Thanks Justsane, I bit the bullet and reported to C/Link yesterday, they are assessing but it does not look good.  I already knew my inheritance as such is not taxed until I invest it!  Will let the forum know the outcome!

Why should your husband continue to get Newstart if you received a ''large inheritance''? Newstart is intended to assist those who have no other means of support while they look for work. If you have a ''large inheritance'', you are quite able to support your husband - as many others who have assets or income have to, despite the fact that they may regard the money as exclusively theirs just because it's in their name. In Australia, Centrelink rules assume that married people should generally share their income and assets. I realize that there are some exceptions - some of which are illogical and unfair - but generally speaking I agree with the premise that if someone inherits a large sum, their spouse should not be putting their hand out for taxpayer support. After all, plenty of struggling taxpayers never have the good fortune to inherit anything.

I wish you well anyway. Hopefully your husband will find a job and that it will all become a non-issue.

its the same principle as the pension.

Spend your savings/wealth first before you get Newstart or the Pension

I think Newstart and Pension should be universal.

The former if youre unemployed and the latter if youre retired
