Hermie

Many years ago in an outback Queensland mining town where people could afford and, like most Aussies, embrace new technology, we had a great laugh with some neighbours when they told us about their new front loading washing machine.

Now unlike ordinary top loaders where once the lid is closed and the little swith engaged, the machine secretly goes about the task of washing and spinning the clothes without letting you know anything about how it does it, the front loader opens up a whole new avenue of family entertainment. It has a lovely round window that shows you the process. They told us how the whole tribe gathered around the new wonder and forsaking the regular TV programs, sat around for a full cycle watching what had apparently been a mystery to them all. Thinking back, that was pretty funny but now we have been subjected to the same wonder and awe as a bit of technology that has been around for many years now and considered as a bit of a gimmick by most, has been adopted into our household. We had purchased our new home some 12 months ago and except for the bedrooms, the floors are predominately polished timber or vinyl. We're not sure where the dust comes from but it seems as if we have a regular home delivery on a daily basis. Now sweeping, vacuuming or swishing works but as many can attest to, if you suffer from backache it becomes a tedious and painful chore. My wife recently hurt her back and as we are both afflicted with the same symtoms I suggested we might look into a robot cleaner. A lot of research later and after visiting some local suppliers, Hermie came to live with us. She had been a display unit and had a couple of little marks on her but he was selling at half price with a 2 year warranty. Talk about being entertained by a washing machine! AFter fully charging her we sent her on her way with a touch of the remote control.

"Getting current position" she announced with a lovely pirouette before engaging her two forward mounted rotating brushes.

With that she took off in what at first appeared a random direction before slowing down at a wall, executing a right hand turn, progressing about 30cm, performing another right hand turn and then heading back the way she had come albeit slightly to the left of the first track. Twas then that we realized that we were standing around watching a vacuum cleaner going about its duty. And, we hardly stopped looking until she had successfully navigated our whole house except for where doors were closed.

"Cleaning completed" she said. "Searching for charging station" she uttered before trundling off to dock herself onto the charging base.

On another occasion she managed to get stuck on a small coffee table. On being picked up and placed away from the offending bit of furniture she was heard to say something like; "Repositioning! Stand clear of the robot!"

It's been a week or two now, the initial novelty starting to wear off but my wife did mention that when she came out of one room while Hermie was whizzing along that she expected it to come running up for a pat! Oh, and the name? She looks like a hermit crab. Must get some of those goggle eyes and glue them on to her. Maybe some nippers and .....Nahh

Lovely laugh GOM, my sister got one set it up then got very upset when her new "friend" who she had left whizzing around when she went shopping wasn't anywhere to be seen when she got back and searched under beds etc until eventually found her sitting happily recharging to finish the job off. She has to be careful tho' to make sure her dog is out of the house when her "friend" is working because the dog became very aggressive to the stranger in the house!

Thought about getting one a few years back when they first came out, but wanted to wait until they had sorted out any problems with them.

Viv does hers pick up the dog hair easily enough.  I thought I might get one for daughter and then I could borrow it when her dog comes to stay.  I get sick of cleaning up the dog hair.

Would you recommend the Hermie. Grumpy

I am sure it does but will ask her she did buy a Kirby Stick not long ago to reach into narrow places where the Robot can't go tho'.

I suppose only time will tell Sandi. We don't have animals anymore so the fur problem is non existent. Price really does determine the level of performance and sophistication you receive for your investment. Even the Roomba comes in a variety of models with appropriate price variations. I believe some people expect way too much from these things. The fact that we haven't had to sweep anywhere since owning it is probably fair testament to its ability. I suppose the next step is to completely negate the need to operate the remote control and simply program in the scheduled start time so we can sit back with a glass of vino and just compliment it on a job well done. Ha Ha

Thanks Viv.  I'd really like to know how good they are as when it was on the forum before some people weren't happy with them.  That's why I didn't get one at the time.

Just spoke briefly to her, she uses it on her carpet in her bedroom to get rid of dog hairs, she has a very little dog with short hair. She also said if a tissue is around it shreds it. Deanne has one, I think better to ask her as she also has a family and would have a broader idea about it. I will let you know how mine goes, eventually.

Thamks for that Viv.  Yes I guess you are not using vacuums at this time.  Wait till you finish all the work.

I'll ask Deanna too.  Better to have a few opinions.

Grumpy, we got rid of ours, it ate the cat!

haha Reagan, the cat? Surely not the cat!

i would love one,   vacuuming is the one thing i put off until it becomes an absolute neccessity,    as it pulls on my back,    and i can only do a little bit at a time,     just had new carpet laid yesterday,    and the pile always comes of it until it has been walked on a bit,   so not looking forward to the next vac to be done,   all the big sales are on at the moment.    i wonder how the price of them are now,     does anyone know,   please,

In response to some questions posed I can offer the following.

Prices range from $20.00 to $1700.00 and you get what you pay for. Nearly all the cheap units are not actually vacuum cleaners but rather glorified mechanical sweepers with little or no suction. Very few are recommended for carpets other than low pile types. The rotating brushes and even minimal suction types will clen visible dust, crumbs and small debris from carpets and all hard floors. A good regular vacuum cleaner is still needed to get deep down dust and dirt from any medium plus piles. You will pay $600.00 + for an intelligent type robot cleaner and by that I mean one that actually uses programs, cameras and sensors to navigate around your home. The latest and greatest in the LG line even has WiFi so you can control the thing from your mobile phone from anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access. You can even access it's on board cameras and set it to sentry mode to keep tabs on your place while you are on holidays. (Around $1500.00)  The one we got was, as mentioned, a store show display unit which was priced down from $989.00 to $489.00) All in all we are so far very happy with it's performance. Look for on-line reviews especially with respect to pet hair before spending your money!

Well I spoke to someone who owns an LG and she said it's useless.  Maybe hers is an older model.

She said her daughters have a Roomba and they are very happy with them and they have dogs.
