Human-caused warming increasing likelihood of record-breaking hot years

A new study finds human-caused global warming is significantly increasing the rate at which hot temperature records are being broken around the world.

Global annual temperature records show there were 17 record hot years from 1861 to 2005. The new study examines whether these temperature records are being broken more often and if so, whether human-caused global warming is to blame.

The results show human influence has greatly increased the likelihood of record-breaking hot years occurring on a global scale. Without human-caused climate change, there should only have been an average of seven record hot years from 1861 to 2005, not 17. Further, human-caused climate change at least doubled the odds of having a record-breaking hot year from 1926 to 1945 and from 1967 onwards, according to the new study.

The study also projects that if greenhouse gas emissions remain high, the chance of seeing new global temperature records will continue to increase. By 2100, every other year will be a record breaker, on average, according to the new study accepted for publication in Earth's Future, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.

The new findings show how climate change is visibly influencing Earth's temperature, said Andrew King, a climate extremes research fellow at the University of Melbourne in Australia and lead author of the new study.

"We can now specifically say climate change is increasing the chance of observing a new temperature record each year," he said. "It's important to point out we shouldn't be seeing these records if human activity weren't contributing to global warming."

The study strengthens the link between human activity and recent temperature trends, according to Michael Mann, a climatologist and director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, who was not involved with the new research.

"This work builds on previous research establishing that, without a doubt, the record warmth we are seeing cannot be explained without accounting for the impact of human activity on the warming of the planet," Mr Mann said.

Record-breaking heat

Record hot years have been occurring more frequently in recent decades. 2014 was the hottest year on record since 1880, but that record was quickly broken in 2015 and again in 2016. Research published earlier this year in Geophysical Research Letters found these three consecutive records in global temperatures were very likely due to anthropogenic warming.

Record-breaking temperatures tend to attract attention because they are one of the most visible signs of global warming. As a result, understanding how and why the rate of record-breaking is changing is critical for communicating the effects of climate change to the public, Mr King said.

Previous research examined changes in rates of record-breaking temperatures in specific countries or regions. However, these studies couldn't analyse global temperature trends because they relied on gathering large numbers of daily temperature records from different sources, according to Mr King. Additionally, they didn't directly attribute changes in record-breaking to human activity.

In the new study, Mr King developed a method to isolate the human role in changing rates of record-breaking temperatures globally. Unlike previous studies, the method uses a single source of temperature data, in this case global annual temperatures, allowing King to study temperature records on a global scale.

Mr King first looked at global temperature data from 1861 to 2005 and identified which years were hot record breakers. He then used a wide array of climate models to simulate global temperatures in this period. Some of the models included only natural influences on the climate such as volcanic eruptions, while other models featured both natural influences and human influences such as greenhouse gas emissions and the release of aerosols into the atmosphere.

Mr King found only the climate models that included human influences had the same number of record-breaking hot years as historical temperature records - 15 to 21, on average. The models without human influences only had an average of seven record-breaking hot years from 1861 to 2005.

He also determined human-caused climate change at least doubled the odds of having a record-breaking hot year from 1926 to 1945 and from 1967 onwards. The odds didn't increase from 1945 to 1967 because human-made aerosol emissions generated a cooling effect, which counteracted warming due to anthropogenic greenhouse gases.

Mr King's research can also be applied to quantify the influence of human activities on a specific record-setting event. He applied his method to record-setting hot global temperatures in 2016 and record-setting hot local temperatures in central England in 2014. He found human influence led to a 29-fold increase in the likelihood of seeing both new records compared to a situation with no human influence on climate.

The US leads the world in reducing CO 2 emissions

The European model which we follow at huge expense to taxpayers has resulted in increased emissions and high electricity prices .

China continues to lead the world in emissions and increasing .

For the facts read the above quoted article .

The planet has been changing since time began -- once there were rainforests in desserts  -- and it will continue to change - it is a natural happening -- but it sure doesn't help by chopping down the likes of the Amazon and having huge oil spills and killing all the wildlife --

Yes, agree and like all living things which the planet is it will continue to evolve and change ad infinitum if mankind can ever stop interfering.

We should all learn to live with the planet, instead of living in spite of it.

Andrew King is only using statistics that suits his argument. His statement "The odds didn't increase from 1945 to 1967 because human-made aerosol emissions generated a cooling effect, which counteracted warming due to anthropogenic greenhouse gases." takes the cake. Where is his proof that aerosol emissions has a cooling effect.

Unfortunately I never find so called climate research convincing.

Volcanoes are usually "downplayed" to a seemingly unrealistic level.

With the end of the ice age gradual climate change is unavoidable, and spread over an unknown duration.

I accept we are adding to the polution problem in an increasing amount, and yes we should be reducing all pollutants, but as to the effect - the scientist never explain it satisfactorily.

Probably a climate agnostic.

don't say you haven't been warned:

Time is running out to prevent a global environmental collapse — that's the stark warning 15,364 of the world's leading climate scientists have sent out.

Key points:15,364 scientists from 180 countries out their names to the BioScience journal articlePaper called for population growth to be limited, and governments to stop only focusing on economic growthHowever, scientists said it was not too late for governments to take action to prevent it

Scientists from 180 countries, many in the developing world, put their names to the journal article published today in Bioscience, which also predicted temperature rises and unpredictable weather patterns that would cause widespread misery.

Kika do you think we should follow the US which has reduced CO 2 the greatest whist maintaining low elecricity prices ?

or do you think the Victorian model of refusing to use the gas they have to replace the coal stations is the way to go ..?

Trump invented "Fake News" and now it's very difficult to trust any news service. I deduct that solely online news services are the most untrustworthy. I also deduct any news source that generates money with sensational (tabloid) headlines and clickbait online bulldust, is unreliable. That leaves the ABC as the only virgin in the room.

Only fools assert that humans are not making the problem of climate change worse.

Well if your right the question is what do we do about it.

The report above is by the energy reasearch institute .

Did you read it?

I agree that the climate is changing. What I don't agree with is affect man is having on that change. We read and hear that scientists agree blah, blah, blah but we are never told anything about those scientists who disagree nor are we given any proof of the supposed 97% who claim that the climate change is man-made. The 97% of scientists who supposedly agree is interesting. How many of them have written papers with proof to support their theory and how many have just read a thesis and raised their hands in agreement.

I recall the 1960's where we were assured that Earth was rapidly heading for another ice age but that didn't happen. So far, we have been assured that the dams would no longer be filled and the rain that fell wouldn't be enough to grow enough food to feed us, the seas would rise and cover the low-lying islands in the Pacific. The icecaps would melt causing all of this and this was going to happen by the year 2012. Politicians told us that the seas would rise 8 metres although, in fairness, that is going to happen by 2030.

Australia now has desalination plants sitting idle but costing us $millions each year as they have to be maintained in the event that we need fresh water. Politicians listened to the vocal minority, bowed to the scientific pressure put on them and spent our money unnecessarily. Whenever a volcano erupts and spews gases into the atmosphere, scientists are unusually silent. If asked about the amount of gases from the volcanic activity in comparison with man-made gases, they assure the questioners that they will get back to them. I have read no opinions given about volcanic gases.

Canberra contributes more to global warming than the rest of Oz put together

only respite is when polllies are on their break

This worries me, toxic smog in New Delhi.  United Airlines has cancelled flights until the air improves.

I went through worse in London in the 1950s .. It no longer occurs ...

I read the study and although I respect what those scientists say, their study only captured trends over the last 25 years. To get a real feel for the effects of climate change there really should be a delay of 40 years between the Cause and Effect. That’s not to say their “remedies” are to be sneezed at but I am wondering how many of them have conducted several studies prior to this one.

Yes, there has been "climate change" since the beginning of time, but humans have added greatly to that. Burning of fossil fuels etc etc etc, as the King of Siam said. I keep spouting the value of renewable energy and am mad as hell that Turnbull (whose party I voted for) is turning his back on it. So many ways to help the planet and so many idiots not taking advantage of them.

As usual Sonny you talk gobblygook .

Before you were born as PS points out we were confronted with Global cooling by scientists and usual hangers on .

If you believe that in addition to the natural cycle of climate change that man has also had an influence then you would have to accept that the US has had the greatest success in reducing Co 2 without high electricity prices.

And that the Australian approach ,copied from the Europeans , of Labor Greens and Turnbull has failed and caused stress with its refusal to use gas to replace closed coal fired Stations.
