They all know it is illegal.

I would have thought that committing an offence that caused a jail sentence whilst awaiting an application for citizenship to go through would automatically disqualify you and cause deportation.  If not this should be the rule.

For those concerned that an otherwise good person could be expelled for a petty crime, I would remind you that it is at the discretion of the hearing Magistrate whether a miscreant is given a jail term or not.

But wouldn't the imam realise the girl was being forced to marry against her will, was he completely blind?

It is about time Sharia Law was illegal in Australia, I have said this before.  If it was it would

solve a lot of problems as I am sure half of them would leave the country.

There is only one legal law in Australia and it is not Sharia (as much as many Muslims want it to be).

Melbourne imam guilty of overseeing illegal child marriage released on good behaviour bond

A former Melbourne imam who conducted a wedding between a 14-year-old girl and a man more than 20 years her senior has been released immediately on a two-year good behaviour bond, after being sentenced to two months in jail. He has already been suspended as an imam and stood down at a mosque. Magistrate Phillip Goldberg acknowledged the maximum sentence of six months in jail for the offence was not adequate, but said that was a matter for the Parliament.
