Is your rubbish bin hiding a secret?

Residents in Sydney’s inner west were surprised this month when the local council began replacing municipal bins, many of which in perfect working order.

They were even more surprised when it was revealed there was a hidden addition to their shiny new bin. And it was telling council about all their filthy habits.

Sydney’s Inner West council has begun rolling out 35,000 new wheelie bins. Just under the rim in the new bins, away from prying eyes, is a small circular device — a Radio Frequency Identification Device, or RFID, tag.

It’s part of the increasing march of the so-called ‘internet of things’ which sees everyday objects — from fridges to kettles collect data on how they are used. Connected fridges can tell when products are expiring, connected bins could tell when you haven’t done enough recycling.

I dread to think what happens to millions of soiled plastic nappies...

I can't image what type of flowers crop up in the spring above the land fill....:)

With the way so many people do not do the right thing I can't say I blame them -- so many just chuck the wrong things in the wrong bins and don't care a hoot for those that have to sift through the recycle stuff, with heaven knows what in there!

I alway wash everything before I put it in recycle and in fact I take ALL the soft plastics to coles to recycle as they make garden seats etc from it and it saves it going to the tip,  I put myself in the position of those that have to recycle  --

I know Coles have bins for the plastic shopping bags - but what other 'soft plaastic' do they take.  Interested as we try and re-cycle as much as possible - and ikethe other respondent we wash out all containers before depositing in bin.

They also take cardboard and rubbish as well -- I just put any soft plastic in their bin mostly wrapping and sometimes some soft bendable small stuff

Hubby is the same.  He is very particular what goes in the recycle.

My neighbour had a visit from our Council last week.  Apparently her son in law put some small electrical element in the rubbish bin...she was given a warning...no idea how they knew as we dont have those spy bins.

...... some of the trucks (maybe all?  I'm not sure...) here in Melbourne  -  have like a small TV screen built into the dash which shows "stuff" being poured into truck  from bin?  Maybe that's how?

Could be Foxy.  Next time I speak with her I will ask how they knew (maybe she was not told though).

Another big brother watching you

The council wastes Rate Payer money simply to change bins which are in good order ???

Surely the money would be better spent on kerb and guttering, footpaths and parks.

These new bins can be hacked .. and make you vulnerable if the bin registers as light... burglars will know when you are on holidays.

I'm just pleased my doctor cant see the rubbish in my bin,

I have found a British shop not far away that sells Walnut whirls. and I have been making up lost time ...lol

OMG they sound wonderful

There is a British shop not far away from where I live...I will go and see if they sell them...never had one so will give a go if they sell them.

If anyone wants them they can be purchased for $3 on this site.  I assume they are the same thing...they are called walnut whip not whirls though!

Radish does it say on the packet where they are made or where they come from -- are they an Aussie product ????

No such luck Plan B

Thanks for the info Abby

I don't think there is much difference in whirls or whips ladies, they seem to all have the same pyramid shape and walnut on the top, but I feel a bit cheated as the ones I remember had a hidden walnut at the bottom inside the whirl...it's missing in the ones I bought...I'll have to indulge in the whips to see if they have them...

I'll just keep eating them until I find one....:)

I love soft centre chocolates
