Jarrod Lyle dies aged 36

Jarrod Lyle, 36, died on Wednesday night following his third battle with cancer, Golf Australia has announced.

The professional golfer is survived by his wife Briony and daughters Lusi, 6, and Jemma, 2.

Lyle went into palliative care just nine days ago after ending treatment for a third bout of acute myeloid leukaemia.

Briony said in a statement on Thursday morning: “It breaks my heart to tell everyone that Jarrod is no longer with us. He passed away peacefully at 8.20pm last night, having spent his final week in Torquay (Victoria) among his family and close friends. Lusi, Jemma and I are filled with grief and now must confront our lives without the greatest husband and father we could ever have wished for.”

Lyle was just 17 and a promising amateur golfer when he was first diagnosed with myeloid leukaemia. He fought back, returned to golf and by the time he was 19 he had reduced his handicap to scratch. He turned professional in 2004 and, by the end of 2006, had earnt a ticket to play on the US PGA Tour.

In March 2012, he suffered a relapse but made another comeback at the 2013 Australian Masters at Royal Melbourne.

He played 20 more tournaments in 2015 and `16 and was universally admired by his peers. But in 2017, the leukaemia returned.

Close friend and fellow professional Robert Allenby said recently: “I could tell from the start that this third cancer battle was going to be tough. There was a confidence in him the first two times, an ‘I’m going to beat this’ attitude. It was different this time… In November he said to me, ‘I’m really scared. I don’t think this is going to be a great outcome.’”
