Leukemia

One of the younger members of our family has just this morning been diagnsed as having leukemia. He's a twelve year old boy. He was supposed to spend the school holidays with his Nan, but on Friday, his Mum phoned and said he was a bit off his tucker, feeling rather lethargic and had bruises all over his body. Went to the doctor, they took blood tests - the results came in this morning. He's now in Westmead Children's hospital. Just hope that he is one of the survivors.

What a worry for all the family Bev. It is such a shock isn't it.

Medical diagnosis and cures and remissions have come a long way since

leukemia. was a death sentence. Lets hope and pray he is able to have

a bone marrow transplant if that is what he needs as there are many more

thousands on the register these days so matches happen much more often.

I am sure his family and the young lad himself will have all the

support he needs and will receive all through his treatment.

All the best

Phyl.

Thanks Phyl, It seems our family has a genetic predisposition to cancer. I've already lost a brother, a sister and a niece to the darned disease. We're all praying for this little fellow

My prayers are with you and your family.Phyl is right. Much more is known about the treatment of leukemia and there are some very good support groups to help families throughout the treatment. My goddaughter was diagnosed with leukemia five years ago and she is still in remission.

Thank you Mary - I'm just getting over the shock of it. I know that there's much more help available now, but I still worry about the little bloke - so young.

Poor little bloke and poor family what a dreadful thing--my thoughts are with them--they do do wonderful things now--I do hope all works out for them--((hugs))

Thank you all - we are still waiting to see if he needs a bone marrow transplant. I'll put my hand up to be tested if he does. Just wonder though how old you can be? His Nan is very upset. We are in a sort of limbo at the moment - just waiting for all the tests to be done.

We have the results of all except one test. He has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia - apparently that is the one that they have the best results in curing, that is if you have to have Leukemia at all. He's a fairly sick little boy at the moment, but we do have hope.

Well that is good to hear although the poor kid will still have a rough trot--((hugs))

Donor

Your ability to donate bone marrow or peripheral stem cells depends on whether:

Your blood type and tissue antigens are compatible with the recipient, and

You are healthy enough to withstand the donation process.

The first screen is age; you must be at least 18 but not older than 60 (age 55 for some registries). That is, at the very least you must be an adult to donate. And, research has shown that donations from older adults are less effective, hence a maximum age.

I have seen on tele. medical programs where children have given bone marrow to siblings!

and in fact havn't a couple of sets of parents had babies just to try and save a child they have with the disease by hoping they will have compatable bone marrow?

All the best to the young bloke Bev. and keep us informed as he is wished all the best in the world in beating this rotten thing but thank goodness not as bad as it once was re advances in cures/remissions and care.

It is a worry for all the family of course. Hope he feels a lot better soon.

At the moment we know that he has to undergo at least two years of chemo-therapy, and some radiation treatments. They haven't mentioned any bone marrow transplants yet and it seems at my age, even if I were a match, I'd be too darned old, unless I was the only one available who was a match and then they'd take the risk. We are all staying positive at the moment and just hoping that he'll be OK quite soon.

I it saddens me that over 60 is too old for donating organs. WHY? If people are healthy and the organs are ina good condition, why the hell can we not give them if we want too.

My husband died last year of a very rare cancer and I would be only to happy to donate my organs to research. Even though I am on the Organ Donor Register they are too old for anything except Research.

Will pray for the lad Bev, Keep us posted on progress. please.

He's had three chemo treatments so far, Is being given appetite stimulate drugs. He's undergone two bone marrow "investigations". He's a very sick little boy. But I know he will get better, after all the treatment. Thanks for your good wishes and prayers - they all help.

Stories like this make you know just how lucky you are--best wishes for the poor little bloke

How is the young man going Bev? I suppose it is a matter of having to go through the treatment and not being

all that well for quite some time. Having such a loving family is the best thing at this time.

Is he able to enjoy his food? or feel he does not want to eat?

Is the chemo. working or too early to really know yet?

All the best to him and the family.

Let us know Bev. how he progresses please, as we do care.

Phyl.
